Unhappy oh the pain, the agony...

    literally...
woke up this morning to take the dog for a walk, and by about 10 past 6, I was scratching furiously, hands swelled up to twice their normal size.
decided that this was a little abnormal, so came home and had a shower. noticed that my body was completely red and covered in white bumps from head to toe, plus my neck was about the size of my head.
called the emergency doc, who decided that i'd better come into the surgery.
she reckoned that I was in the tail end of a pretty severe allergic reaction (which is always nice to hear!)
gave me a shot of something painful and told me to double dose zirtec and piriton for the next week or so, as well as having a nice dose of steroids.
said that if I start itching and going red and white again to call an ambulance as it's still possible that i might end up going into toxic shock.
either it's flea bites (it's getting near that time of year) or from the king prawns I cooked two nights ago.
best if i don't allow myself to get warm
the worst part is the itching - it's stopped now, but even thinking about it makes me want to scratch.
yesterday was pretty bad, but i'd assumed it was just a couple of bites, or from stinging nettles from when i was walking the dog the other day.
however the lesson is, boys and girls - if your hands suddenly develop cartoon-like proportions, it's best to call the doc pretty much immediately.
also talked to nhs direct to did (to their credit) recommend that they call out an ambulance for me when I started losing my voice on the phone to them.

not nice, not fun - think i'll stay away from seafood for a few weeks!

Oooh not nice! Have you ever had something like this before? About a year ago I was suddenly found that my hands had gone red and started itching and came up with tiny little bumps all over. I had some antihistamine and it helped but it took days to go, never found out what it was!

    Hope you get better soon!

Ouchies - sounds terrible mate. Get the calomine lotion out as that should ease the itching a bit.

Freaky! You're the third person I've heard this happen to in the last couple of months. It's happened to me twice now, and it's never pleasant. First time I thought it was a reaction to plastic nappy bags for my son, but the second time I had no idea.

By all accounts it could be stress activated. The second time the bumps were actually tiny blisters which eventually faded away, no lasting damage, but not comfortable. I found immersing them in very cold water helped.

Ouch! When I was a kid my eyes had a bizarre allergic reaction to something (never found out what) and swelled up like frog's eyes (apparently) but this sounds really nasty! Get well soon!

I had this a couple of years ago, again never found out why it went after a few days, I just had alot of camamile lotion on hand whenever the itching started. That and cool baths helped (the nicest feeling in the world when the itching stops )

    cheers guys,
feeling a bit dozy now - might have to have a short day at work... unfortunately flying to NZ on business on Saturday for 2 weeks, so need to make sure I'm ship-shape and squared away by then, else will be a bit of a nightmare.

it's very odd, I can't remember the type of blistering the doc called it, but suffice to say it's not a pleasant way spending a couple of hours waiting for the doctor's surgery to open!

At least you got it sorted, glad you're able to manage it slightly... hope all goes well

At least you don't have mild excema like moi ;( which has its physical damage as well as appearance damage.

Also lately, I don't know what it is but I have had mad rashes everywhere on my body, and sometimes it's really persistent. This has only been about during like the last 4 weeks but it's like I have the hives or something...

Beware the NHS direct website. They ask you a few harmless sounding questions as they try to diagnose your toothache / sore elbow / scratched knee. Then at the end they tell you to dial 999 immediately. Scared the hell out of me so I've steered clear of it since.
