im getting normal speeds, i always use http://myspeed.visualware.com/uk
more accurate and always constant. i was on the phone to ntl and asked for the mac code and they asked why, i said im moving to sky broadband because it doesnt limit the speed etc, they offered me 10mb for 3 months now at my current price so my mum said to take it, didn't get the mac tho but i'll be getting it soon when they start messing up the internet.

Size M(2mb) lines can download up to 350MB before the line drops to 1mb.
Size L(4mb) lines can download up to 750MB before the line drops to 2mb.
Size XL(20mb) lines can download up to 3GB before the line drops to 5mb.

    Full Info Here
    Those limits are a joke.
I hardly download (my total downloads for browsing, gaming, and evrything else is usualy only a few gigs), but say I come back and wanted to download something urgently on my 4mb connection - I could use it for 25mins at full before it throttled.

Surely a better way to do it would be to look at those doing it on a regular basis, and talk to them. I dont see why I should suffer because I need somthing at a certain time of the day.

After all the "we dont limit your connection, like some" advertsing they put out too

i am just thankful its not the 1gb per day again... now that would be stupid.

I think the aim of this is to make us think about 'when' we download, I am not sure if its going to work though. I think its only fair if others are having terrible service at peak times something had to be done...

I would have thought it may have been easier to contact the 5% that totally hammer the service via email and tell them to cut it out at peak times. Then stick those lot on all on the slow list, After all they probably loose money on those that download pron 24/7, so they wouldnt be missed if the left to another provider.

Am I reading that right? If you have XL and download more than 3gb between 4 and 12 then you will be capped?

Who downloads 3gb a night? Thats an insane amount..... If you do exceed, how long are you capped for? Just for that night? Is your original speed restored at midnight?

As many of you will know I work for VM, but am none the wiser. Got a generic internal email on the subject with no details at all....

However, so far as advertising goes. and again I have no inside info, this is only my opinion. They aren't capping your download limit, you can still download as much as you want. They are limiting the speed. So from a legal point of view i suppose its still an unlimited service.

If its just a one night limit, then I don't see a major problem if you have the 20mb service. On the lower packages though, your speed may be limited quite regularly. Guess it may be a trick to get customers to upgrade to the higher packages.

I think I would prefer a traffic shaping policy tbh as opposed to this physical speed capping. I don't use P2P a lot and shaping mainly targets the heavily abused P2P ports which you can almost guarantee is where most of the overusers traffic is going. Shaping wouldn't normally affect the normal user on a mid range package who say wanted to download 3 600mb Ubuntu ISO's in a night once in a while.

if you download 3gb at lets say 11:59 PM, you'll be throttled for 4 hours. 3gb is nothing, most games are that size. I download games from time to time to play, so I find it crappy.

So its a 4 hour cap from the moment you hit the limit then?

    yep, quote from the site

This will last for 4 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied.
its kinda dumb, they should do something like users who havent downloaded as much today get higher priority. most of the time it will be people who just check emails and such, and they wont be on for long. therefore our speeds slow down for a certain time but not 4 hours!

    lol...

yeah the way some are harping on, you would think they are putting you down to 56k, 3gb at peak is enough for most people its the 24/7 warez peep's that will hit the problem.

I would much rather it this way (them telling me to do most of my downloading off peak) than them enforcing the 1gb that they had in the FUP not too long ago.

5mbit is still fast chaps... even 1mbit is enough

im not a warez peep and i can download maybe 3gb in a day or more at times. Fear is a free game, that was like 2gb or so, and the 3gb limit is for XL, and im on L, UT2004 mods are big, the mega packs are 100+ mb, americas army is like 2gigabytes too. oh dont forget if i wanna play lineage i guess i cant download its 4GB client. OP is right it is becoming a inturdnet. i mean limiting the download is enough the upload speeds are **** as it is and that gets limited too.

1mbit is fast enough when thats all you got. same as an athlon xp is enough for your pc needs. but when you've got something better why the hell would you settle for less.

Fear is big yes, but do you download Fear every day?

    Or Americas Army?

You probably download it once really, like everyone else. So just listing files which are greater than 3gb in size is sort of missing the point.

The point is 3gb a night is plenty really.

If you want to play Lineage then download it. If you get downgraded for a few hours for hitting the limit so be it.

Provided you don't want to download it again the next day, you've not much to worry about.

And if you hit your limit on L, then the file will download slightly slower... its not the end of the world. Might make things a bit quicker for the 95% of people who don't download 3gigs of stuff a day as well... which would be nice.

thats not the point, then everything else gets downgraded, especially since this connection is shared by 3 pc's

also for lineage when i play on private servers they have patches which are big too. fear was an example and americas army is updated regularly anyway. hd trailers are like 150mb, and I like watching trailers sometimes. The whole point is knowing that its not limited. or going to be capped etc.

Well, I'd suggest upgrading to XL so you've 3gigs to play with, which is plenty for anyone, no arguments, or just do your downloading before 4 or after 12. Or change ISP.

The choice is yours mate. If you dont like the evil Branson empire, vote with your feet.

The limits are ridiculous. The 4mb one can be reached in 25min of solid use. Maybe if they just stopped upgrading the connections to 20mb and spent some money on infrastructure they might have not had to do this.

Im getting problem with my 4mb line all the time, the download drops to ridiculos amounts all the time.. mostly to under 500kbs .. yet the uploads always stay the same.

So after ringing and complaining to virgin, my speed magically increased, for a few weeks, then droped again...!

If they are throtling at 750mb an evening, im not downloading that much in 4hours! And the virgin maintenance page has been like that for aggess...

I dont think Virgin media has anything to do with Richard Branson.

Many people with cable net also have cable phone, digital tv etc. It is not simply a case of jumping ship. You would have to pay for a bt line if you wanted to change to a non cable provider.
