You'll find it's in a lot of milk based products, when my Dad was a Manager at Dairy Crest, they used Rennet to speed up the coagulation of the milk into curds and whey, for Cheese making, I bet they still do it.
Stuff stinks as well, when the Dairy was processing the rennet it used to stink out the town.
This tickled me
They make it sound like the Animal will be killed especially for it?! more likely they'll pay abbatoirs for the stuff from an Animal that's being killed anyway maybe?Vegetarian Society spokesman Liz O'Neill said: "People will not like the idea that you cannot make a Mars bar without killing a calf.
Also note the use of the word calf as opposed to cow. tugs the heart strings just that little bit harder
Most cheese is vegetarian in this country (maybe not in europe though)
Animal rennet cheese stinks like crap anyway...
Good thing I don't eat any of them. To be fair though, veggies can pretty much NOT avoid eating some kind of dead animal substitute anyway. I mean look at wine gums, or anything similar to wine gums (gelatine, made from hooves of horses isn't it?) all of those listed chocolates. Even salads have some kind of animal in them nowadays
Sorry that was a rather terse post on my behalf. Reading the link properly, I see what you're getting at.
There was in my opinion, no real need for the Veg Society to add the whole bambi killer speil.
Because it plays into their hands. The omnivores hands that is. By making emotional statements you make for a weaker argument than one hewn from solid logic, again in my opinion.
Why are you sorry? Funkstar said about them specifiying calves to make it sound worse, you pointed out that rennet only comes from calves, he accepted he was wrong, doesn't sound harsh to me lol.
Gelatine is actually made of pig skin and cow bones generally (as far as I'm aware). And actually it's very easy to avoid eating animal products these days, everything is labelled as vegetarian if it is, and if it's a company that doesn't use the veggie sign on their food, I'll just read the ingredients list to see if there is anything bad.Originally Posted by Kezzer

Well I am a veggie, but there are times where I really can't avoid meat, especially recently. Trying to make a good impression on the other half's parents, they invite you for a meaty meal without your knowledge.
/me pretends it's okay trying to gulp down every bite
In all fairness it was a rather snappy post.
On the one hand yes, it's a factual statement that rennet comes from the stomach of calves alone, not bovines as a whole. But on the other hand the Vegetarian Society spokesperson said "People will not like the idea that you cannot make a Mars bar without killing a calf", which adds an emotional spin to the story.
It's in adding this spin that Funkstar was correct in his original statement.
I'm not a strict veggie, I used to be though. When I cook for myself I never cook meat. My parents never cook meat for me either, it's just my girlfriends parents who cook meat for me. I don't have much choice because the mother-in-law-to-be has two little ones herself whom she cooks meat for. So if I agree to stay around for dinner it usually ends up having some meat in it, but sometimes I can avoid it.
I don't disagree with eating meat, I just disagree with the way it's made, mass-farming of animals that is. If they were allowed to live naturally then I wouldn't mind it so much. Plus, humans can live without meat.
