southampton and southampton institute (now renamed solent university to sound more flashy) have never had any links whatsoever - one's a university, one's an ex poly in the same city.

I would recommend asking somewhere like thestudentroom, not to say that people here are giving bad advice - far from it - but the people on that forum are more likely to be at, applying for or just finished university.

    sorry i should of stated.

I didn't visit the campus much, mostly the pubs

    Once there it was:
    "so you at southhampton?"
    "no."
    "oh?" <disapointed look, backs away>

without the chance to mention that i'm not at a poly!

I think they also hate the portsmouth folk, but thats entirely understandable.

All the universities you are looking at are fairly good. Look for the one where you are going to enjoy yourself and feel most comfortable at.
I went to Warwick as the campus was fantastic and the atmosphere was great. I enjoyed myself a lot there.
It has (had maybe) the largest independant real-ale festival in the country! Don't let that be the reason for going there...

    that's just local rivalry.

avoid the city center when it's southampton vs pompey playing football!

My biggest piece of advice would be to visit the universities. I was set on Birmingham and Loughborough and then upon visiting them realised i really wouldn't have liked it there. Ended up going to UMIST (now University of Manchester) as i loved the campus feel in amongst the city. Computer Science modules I've done haven't been inspiring though although i think that's just because i am not particularly into the subject
