I guess it's too late so say this, but I believe that the way to get them to 'hatch' is to keep them warm, i.e. under the heat of a light bulb or similar.

It's been a long time, but we used to have them when I was a kid in Aden I think it was, or perhaps Kenya. If you put them in the fridge they stop doing anything, so you can keep them longer, then when you take them out you keep them in your hand and they warm up and start to jump about. I recall being told that the jumping means that they are trying to hatch so you warm them up to help them out.
Still, don't feel bad about murdering a helpless larva that was only struggling to be free. It was probably going to die in Britain anyway.
