    right, another thought.

what about DVD (etc) upscalers, ie the new PS3 1.80 firmware allows DVDs to be upscaled to 1080p, this is surely fine tho?

    upscaling is bull****

playing a 320x200 game on a 1600x1200 monitor doesn't invent extra graphics out of nowhere, and the same applies with DVD

It's still the same disc for personal domestic use (I assume...). Upscaling is just a method of viewing it, like if you have a telly that can pan+scan widesceen to 3:4, or anything like that - it's still the same disc being played.

Legally buying a DVD entitles you to watch the unskippable anti-piracy advert. Something that you would only have to endure if it actually was a legal copy. Are they trying to force people into piracy just to avoid seeing the damn thing for the millionth time?

I never have to watch it

Mind I do set VLC to just go straight to the menu

And if you don't like the DVD buying it legally entitles you to use it as a coaster

I don't mind not being able to skip the copyright thing, it's when you can't go to the menu when they've lined up 10+ rubbish trailers for B-rate movies, grrrrrrr!

If I remember right there was a big stink about this a while back. Something to do with the movie companies not being supposed to use that section of the DVD for advertising purposes.
