You never said what shop you're opening.....

    Basically important ones are:

    * refunds policy
    * No sale of knifes and alcohol and aerosol to underaged
    * Bad behaviour towards staff and other customers will not be tolerated and WILL be taken up in court.

Oh and don't forget to stick up signs saying CCTV in operation!

    Others one may include:

    * This store is a member of the "StoreNet" operation or similar (depending what the local area/police called their neighbouring watch!)
    * Please remove all headgear for security reasons etc

That's all I can think of for now!
    Woohoo now Assistant Manager!

    Yes...

Im sure criminals would move on to another shop at the sight of that sign

"oh, look lads, no headgear" says Dave as he puts away his freshly sharpened axe

    >"dammit, looks like these guys have solid security" replied Steve as he eyes up another shop to attack.

    You're very welcome

I'm sure you already have, but the easiest thing to do is to pop into into some of the more reputable shops near you and see what they have up.

A few folk have touched on putting up signs with "no (whatever...!)" in them. That's a risky business, as you don't want to restrict anyone who might have money in their pocket. You just need to decide whether you want lass hassle or less money. For example, if you ban sprogs you'll get as easier life, but you'll also do without the 10% of them who actually have money to spend. And you risk offending their parents.

And don't worry about warning signs to the likes of chavs/pikeys/Independent readers. They'll know where your CCTV cameras are without you needing to tip them off. The majority of shoplifters know their rights all too well and don't need a sign. I've had some threaten me with kidnap charges for detaining them when caught red-handed

And Agent is slightly more sarky than I'd have been but if someone is wearing a helmet to rob you, he's not going to go to a more helmet friendly store and rob them instead.

So if you put up a sign banning motorcycle helmets, be prepared for anxiety the first time someone comes in wearing one, as you'll be sure he's noticed the sign and you'll worry about why he's not complying, or worse (as I've seen happen) you'll think his ignorance of your warning is proof he is actually gonna rob you

One warning/notice/sticker thing that I'd say is valuable, and often overlooked, is having an emergency glazier/joiner service, and having their sticker in your window. So if some toerag decides to pan it in, the Coppers can call them and get the Window patched up, regardless of whether they're able to get in touch with you or not. I don't think it costs much to have the service, and you can agree costs in advance. Better that than trying to phone a glazier at midnight and having them do the usual sharp-intake-of-breath stuff ! I had much fun sorting a simlar mess, when a street sweeper decided to somehow "sweep" the bottom edge off our window, letting the glass fall. From then on, Glaziers were sorted in advance

The part that narks me is that they wont allow you to pay at the side thing (the one thats used at night) in the day.
All I have to do is put the money on it and they give the change, but they always make an issue about it.

When travelling a distance though, its not just the helmet which is an issue.
Gloves come off first, so you can actually feel the clip on the helmet to undo it, then its the hood thats under it (keeps wind out and you warm, but makes you look like something out of Counterstrike), and its certain that the earplugs have fallen out by now too.

If your hands have been sweaty, its a royal pain getting them back into the gloves too. And if its raining, that's all the leak seals broken too.

I *always* pay by card now because of this. Can pay at the machine and not have to worry about taking a thing off.

Just don't get why they wont let us use the side payment bay.
Gotta say, even though it says that on the door, I don't, and they never moan about it. Well, apart from one Esso garage, and then I just said 'Err, why? You've got my numberplate' to which they didn't answer and served me...
