I read a magazine test of a jetski (I'm pretty sure it was in a bike mag) where they claimed to have whizzed off across the Solent at 50mph. Isle of Wight and back in a few minutes.

They may have been making it up and they certainly didn't go from Bournmouth. As Zak says, the sea can be very dangerous, I wouldn't do it without a well worked out backup plan. A tow rope from another jetski is not, IMO, such a plan.

I think going from Bournemouth at Hengistbury Head/Mudeford would be a bit too far. Between Milton-on-Sea and Portsmouth would be much more likely. I've flown gliders from Lee-on-Solent to the Isle of Wright and back easily enough in a few minutes or so (albeit at 40-50 knots!). The other thing you would have to be careful of is the tides, as they can be quite quick in that channel.

The solent is an extremly busy shipping route, not only does it has a naval dockyard, it also has a container port, oil terminal, cruise liner terminal, etc. I would strongly advise contatcing the coast guard before putting too mutch effort in to planning this. On the plus side people do kayak from the mainline to go fishing around the IoW, but thye do carry emergency radios, gps, etc.

You might find this interesting in an anorakish kind of way

Gets rather busy during the day, and mainly covers large ships.

Thats pretty cool. It wouldn't be nearly as busy, but if there was one for Aberdeen harbour, my brother would never be off it.

The RYA run courses on Jetskis (They call 'em "Personal Watercraft" though). These should cover the basics, by which point I'm sure you'd be able to decide for yourself how crazy a particular passage would be.

    http://www.rya.org.uk/Courses/person...aftcourses.htm
Check 'em out, probably damn good fun. And as an RYA Senior Dinghy Sailing Instructor (Sounds posher than it is) I feel I ought to put in a plug.

I've read (in RYA magazines) of people doing passages in Jetskis, (carrying charts, radios, flares, food, water etc in dry-bags slung over their shoulders) I have no idea how far they went, but I've a feeling it was along the coast rather than across a body of water.
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

Cheers for that link Flibb, I passed it onto my mate who does Man Overboard and GPS systems for the marine industry/navy. He actually works and lives in Southampton and found it really interesting and useful.

Consequently he is now on top of his office installing a larger antenna so he can get the same info real time for himself
