Never dealt with them but thinking of giving them a call as renewal came in for present 'insurance yesterday. Now it's a ' new for old ' policy but 650 Up 120 on last year- but they have decided now that the ' rebuild the hoose ' costs have jumped to 450k -- total rip off but somebody will have to pay for them ' floods' . Hope you get on ok .

I would assume renewals for house insurance are like those for car. You get offered a crap deal.
Re do it online and see how it comes out.

    do you have a 1.35 million £ house ?

otherwise the cost of rebuilding a house is 1/3rd of its selling value as the land is normally worth double the value of the house?

may be worth a phone call back to push that point and get your premium back to normal.

i got my info from a friend who is an estate agent.

no problem, its also worth ringing up a couple of local builders and asking what it would cost to rebuild your house

As a rule of thumb its between £60 and £110/sq ft to build a house, not including the land cost, and obviously not if you have some kind of listed/conservation building that needs to go back up exactly the same. So even at a high end estimate of £100/foot gives 4500 sq ft, given that the average uk house is only about 2.5k sqft, that seems a little bit on the humongous side (although you may live in a mansion) Check with your mortgage lender, as long as they are satisfied with the value of the buildings insurance you should be sitting pretty.

On a more on topic note, direct line are pretty good, i have my car insurance with them, and last claim (when some little ned pulled the door half off the car) was handled speedily & efficiently

I've only made one claim with Direct Line home, it was for a pair of glasses that i had an accident and smashed them. Phoned them up on a monday explaining what had happened, they just told me to go and order a new pair, pay the £50 excess, and let them know the final costs. I did so and they sent a check to me in the name of my optician. Was so easy and with hardly any contact with the insurance company.

I had to do a claim with Direct Line a couple of years ago, basically one of the pipes from a radiator leaked and damaged a laptop.

Direct Line arranged for a company to look at it to see if it could be repaired and then after they advised the laptop was damaged beyond repair they sent me a new laptop.

In all in took around 7 days - from them sending the courier to me getting the new laptop, also as a bonus the insurance didnt increase when I renewed the policy the year after

    Re: direct line insurance

Does anyone out there happen to have a copy, in any format, of the Direct Line Home Insurance policy for 2005 including the Legal Protection section?

DL keep their policy documents on line (PDF format) however the current one is for 2007.
