Changing a BT master phone socket

I want to replace my BT master phone socket with an antique brass effect one. I can buy the replacement socket but I understand that I am not allowed to change the socket as that is BT property and has to be done by BT.

Has anyone done this and, if so, what is the procedure and cost involved?

Having just recently had a BT engineer around for a line fault he said that their callout charge is 60 quid just to turn up if it isn't a fault with their equipment & then there will be labour (charged in 15 minute blocks iirc).

In reality you'll probably get away with it. However, if BT ever come round, to fix anything, they'll do their nut. The only legal way round it would be to get BT to come round and move the master socket to somewhere it fits in with your decor, then have your brass one as an extension.

The irony is that it's a five-minute job and I even have a professional IPC insertion tool in my electronics toolkit to do the job! I just hate being a rebel...

I'd do it - I replaced mine which cracked originally and I don't mind arguing it with them - I'm not going to lose sleep over it

Not quite true I don't think - if you have a gas meter in your house it ain't your property - everything beyond it is, same for your main leccy fuses, meter etc.
The master belongs to BT and if you change it they will blame any little fault on it......getting them to move it and install an extension like mentioned above is best - of course you could just change it but it might come back to bite you in the ass later if you develop a fault

BT are getting bad, there now employing a company called pc-callout.biz to do home visits for broadband, unqualified people as i applied to work for them and found out to my horror, no skills needed, and the office is in Spain so if anything goes wrong your screwed...

i left after my 1st callout, i feel sorry for anyone who gets one of these when they assume there paying for a trained BT engineer to come out and inspect there PC and connection, will end up costing you over £60 to get them there and thats charged straight to your phone bill..

its really not good service any more.. but i dare say you could argue the toss about paying the bill if there sending out none certified techs.

IIRC you are allowed to change the faceplate, but not the whole thing.

Don't quote me on that though

The only difference with the master is the capacitor to make the phones ring - if you change it they blame inferior components (ye right!) or that you've screwed the wiring......

The thing is, if you monkey around with the master socket and mess up the connections, and if it causes damage to exchange equipment, the size of the bill you get could be horrendous.

somthing almost impossible for Bt to prove though.. must have been a lightning strike

am i also right in thinking you no longer need the cap in the master socket, infact i read somewere it can narf up your ADSL signal if its still in line?

i thought that dated back to GPO and the old bell ringer phones?

Really? My master socket has just a capacitor on it.

Hardly an active in line protection for the exchange now is it?

I was under the impression the protection gear was at the exchange/streetbox.

But anyway as has been said, if you change the faceplate, keep the old one!
