Re: So Office Chairs, an important bit of kit!

I also use http://www.aeronchair.co.uk/index.cfm at work. It's a damn nice chair.

At home I have a cheapo ~£50 thing, it's okay but not that great. My parents have a nice office chair, cost about ~150 from costco. I have to say that is really nice, if I had a spare few bob knocking about I'd certainly get one, I'd sooner buy that than one of those Aeron for the price differance anyway!

Re: So Office Chairs, an important bit of kit!

What really annoys the heck out of me regarding Office Chairs is that BIG organisations pay stupid amounts of money for rubbish chairs, yet good chairs (like the £50 leather chairs viking direct etc) can be bought for much less... for some reason big organisations always seem to use stupid office supply catalogues where basic chairs cost hundred of pounds!! GRR!

(guess who's stuck with a rediculously uncomfortable crap chair at work, and has to have a heath and safety workstation inspection before he can even start to try and convince them to get me a better chair... all because the better chair has to come from a stupid catalogue where the good chairs cost £300+ !!!! )

wow yeah 300 quid is pretty extreme. Unless it was like a throne, made from gold and with a holder for your chalice of wine.

Well I have a skinny bony arse (never started a conversation with that before), and often I use a computer for looooong periods of time. If im working on it, I can be using it all day. And in the evenings I often play games and/or watch a film. So I can be sitting for hours and hours. My old chair was crap and by bum got really sore, so I saw a cheap one in Tesco! of all places. It was just 30 odd quid for a big leather chair.

It was pretty well made, quite big and sturdy, so it was great for sitting in, and it had more padding on the chair bit for my bony bum. But the problem was... it had plastic arm rests with no padding, and I found my elboes got really sore because I rested my elboes on it when I was typing and using the mouse and stuff.

So I went to Cost Co with a plan to buy some black masking tape, and then I was going to tape some foam to the arms... But when I was there, I saw this amazing office chair. It was about £99 quid which scared me, and I went there with the intention to spend about 5 quids... but I just figured I should buy it anyway and not be a cheapskate for once in my life, and I'm really glad I did.

Its dead comfy, it lets you control how easy it is to rock back and forth, and you can lock it in place if you want. It goes up and down etc. The arse part is really soft and padded, so I can sit on it all day and not feel like the base of my spine has been beaten with a bassball bat, the back is high enough for me to sit back and properly relax in it when watching a film, the arm rests are really padded so I can rest my elboes on them all day and they support my arms when Im playing counterstrike or whatever. And lastly, its a dark reddish leather, so it looks really srubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishy.

Well recommended. Cost Co is the place to go if you want something like that. This chair is called Model 6486. Item# 89314

Its ace. There was also one for about £120 which had a higher back. I wish I got that one now instead, but I'm happy with this anyway, and because I'm so short, my head is still supported when I sit back in this anyway. But I'm starting to learn the benefits of not being a cheap arse now. You pay more, but usually that just means whatever you buy is much better, and lasts much longer, so is probably just as good value as buying cheap stuff all the time.
if theres one near enough i'll take a look

but i know what you mean about not being cheap, i think i've had my cheap phase, gonna invest from now on

lmfao - QFT.

Where do you get said thrones anyway? I was wondering if I could mod one to use as the loo. Can't really think of anything better.... maybe a newspaper holder could come out one side ?

I don't know how my mate managed it but he's got an airplane seat as his chair - complete with fold out tray and reclining action.

many a party has been disturbed by grown men arguing over a chair, quite like musical chairs if I must say, without the pauses in the music though

Re: So Office Chairs, an important bit of kit!

I've had a cheap argos chair for like 3 years now.
Its awful, im alway uncomfortable and after a day inside (when i'm normally at my computer) my back aches constantly when im not slouching for 4-5 days afterwards.
Oh and the chairs we have on tesco checkouts are 10 times worse.
Did 4 hours the other day and thought i was going to be sick i was in so much pain.
But well, i can't afford to buy a new chair so i deal with it

I know what you mean, and i hate when workplaces are cheap on that kind of furniture

and its even more annoying when they spend a lot of money on furniture that isnt very good.

Anyone got any opinions on this:
http://www.chairsupermarket.co.uk/pr...rator%20Chairs

I would love to get an Aeron, but can afford it not even second hand off Ebay.

Re: So Office Chairs, an important bit of kit!

It'll probably be okay, certainly seems to have a few more options than the really cheap chairs (i.e. backward tilt and that's it). The most important part of a chair for me is the lumbar support (lower back) as I tended to really slouch when sitting at the PC (whilst leaning forward).

I'd personally start saving for an Aeron as they are very comfortable and should last you many years without a problem. I was replacing the cheap chairs I got from Argos/Viking every 12-14 months which was fine but they're really not good chairs to spend 12 hours a day in.

It depends how much time you're going to spend in front of the PC. I work from home so spend all day in it and much of the evening if I'm on forums etc so it made sense for me. Like I've said in the past when people gasped at how much I've spent, I'd rather spend £900 on a chair now that £900 on a chiropracter in later life.

However, any chair that gives you plenty of options (like the one you've listed) is going to be a significant step up in ergonomics over the really cheap executive chairs.

That Herman Miller Celle posted earlier is only £300, so i think you can stretch from £130 to £300

its got to be worth it, for the warranty alone

The Celle looks like a really nice chair - whats the difference between that and the Aeron that justifies the price difference?

Not really sure tbh, i guess the aeron is simply the best model they do, and the celle is a better value model that is probably 90% as good but doesnt have the top features.

Re: So Office Chairs, an important bit of kit!

A few years ago i phoned my local fire station and asked when they would be renewing the chairs they use in the 999 centre and if i could have one of the old ones. They said in a couple of months and took my number. I never expected it, but blow me then phoned me back in a few weeks and asked if i would like to come and collect it!

£500 chair, small rip but super compy, loads of adjustments and still going strong after 4 years They would only let me have 1 though!
