Rear Projection TVs

We need a new TV, and we saw a nice 42" rear projection TV, but I dont know anything about them.

I dont know the advantages or disadvantges, so can anyone shine some light on rear projection TVs? Is it better to get one of these, or a normal 32" one?

Bigger is better Check out the viewing angle because they tend to be smaller than that of 'tube' sets, but apart from that you can get some very nice one nowadays, some good looking ones as well

there's supposed to be a nice tosh one out at the moment as well, prehaps the one you saw, gets good reviews but i've never seen it for myself.

Yeh, it was a Toshiba one, looked great, and it was £1199, i thought it might be worth it, since its 42". And its also available in 52"

Remember you can't use game consoles on a read projection TV. Well you can, but you will just get anything that stays on the screen for a long time burned into the screen. So make sure if you have Sky that you get rid of the little red dot in the corner as I have seen that burned into quite a few, and it is such a shame

I have allways found the picture quality on rear projectors to be quite poor. not sure if that has changed since I last looked at them but I doubt it. I was round at my mates house the other day and they had a normal projector set up and I was actually quite impressed with it, 4 player mario kart kept us amused well into the late hours...

Picture quality of rear projection TV's is noticeably poorer than that of normal tube or projection. It is however the cheapest way of getting a massive screen.

As I keep saying, nothing beats CRTs in terms of quality yet.
Get yourself a kickass Toshiba set for £1000 or so

Yeah - If you can spend £1400 on a TV, spend £1000 on a decent projector and just use that ... it'll be better quality and the exact size you want!

Except £1000 won't get you a very good home cinema projector. So as I said, CRT.... Lol

Back to the discussion though, £1000 will get you a decent projector for what us home users require. I used to own a projector before I went plasma and I had a Sony one (forget the model) and it cost around £900 (this was last year too) and it was perfect.

a projector doesnt make a good primary telly, for starters there is no tuner and the bulbs got a limited life and are expensive. good for films, not too good for a primary telly

the quality of a r/p telly is not as good as a normal telly - for that money i would personally just get a 36" pictureframe tv that tosh do - empire direct have them for £1200 iirc, they used to be 2k. you can get a cheap rp (42") for about £600 these days, but i'd really reccomend a propper 100hz crt

I have to agree with Howard on this one. £1000 doesn't buy a very good home cinema projector. At that price they're fine for doing presentations but due to the technology they use the picture will look all pixelated if you're projecting video.

you are all rather mistaken as to the picture quality of rear projection sets, they can hold their own against a 'tube' set, and are technically superior to any front projection system. crt projector in a dark cabinet? yes please.

front projection systems are very good for providing a big image, but there are other considerations, where you are going to put it, room light levels become particularly important etc.

if i were buying a new tv and didn't have the space and light levels for a front projection system RPTV would definately be my next choice.
