Because she topped the charts for a month with her debut song (first self-written female to do so), because she had a string of top hits, because she had several top-selling albums, because she won Brit awards, an Ivor Novello awards and even had a several Grammy nominations?

She's a musician. Unlike so many of today's "stars", she's a musician first and foremost, and not a publicity-seeking minimally-talented celebrity wannabe. She writes her own music, she draws on all sorts of both genres and influences, and is often experimental in nature. She certainly eschews both typical music industry Americanisation and commercial pressures and does her thing, her way and doesn't jump to record company whims. In other words, she puts her musical drive ahead of commercial success .... such as in having refused to do almost any tours .... and yet achieved enormous popularity and commercial success anyway.

Her work and her voice are ..... erm .... distinctive. I'd suspect most people would love it or hate it, but enough people love it to ensure her own little spot in musical history.

    That's how she did it.

Personally, my question would be how the hell OK Computer came first?

The Joshua Tree is a good Album but I think Achtung Baby is better.
The Joshua Tree is more of a 'coffee table' album I reckon.
The Verve higher than The Stone Roses, whuh?????

I was about to post why Achtung Baby is not on there. I too prefer it to Joshua Tree. Achtung Baby should be riding high up there (with Joshua Tree ) and also Counting Crows.

    Re: The 100 Greatest Albums

I'm amazed that I that 20 of the albums on the list. I've got 9 of the top 20 but I think I've filled my cd collection with too many special offers. It pointless arguing over personal preference, like music, hopefully no one is that persuasive that they can convince me that I like an album that I don't. The list might give you a sample of music you've not heard that you might like.

My top album, it depends on my mood, at the moment: The stone roses - The stone roses but I don't particularly like Fools Gold.

Now I'm not decrying her obvious musical ability, it's just been a mission of mine since she kept appearing on music award noniation lists though not having released anything for years. A mystery widely reported in the musical press. Just ... odd, to me anyway.

And the Beatles... I just don't get them either.

And why isn't Spiceworld in there?

    Re: The 100 Greatest Albums

Isn't this the same one from a couple of years ago? Or did the same people just vote for the same stuff?

I think its pretty lame anyway. Its just so mainstream. It should be top 100 mainstream albums that the average joe knows... There are no little gems in there. Its just all the big albums that sold many millions. It also stinks of fanboyism too. Radiohead, U2, and Nirvana for example - have enormous armies of fans browsing the web, just waiting for a poll like this Not that they don't deserve to be up there (Nevermind ftw), but still, how many Lou Reed fans are going to be hanging around CH4 website or wherever. Then theres all the old geezers who choose Dark Side of the Moon, and all the young people who choose it because they want to be seen as serious muso types with a deep understanding of music etc.

Some awesome stuff in there though. Most of the top 20 are some of my favourite bands. But polls are just daft. They dont mean anything really. Its more to do with demographics and stuff. And if it did mean anything, it would only annoy me, because its just not right to have the likes of Jagged Little Pill, higher up the list than the likes of Doolittle and Blood Sugar Sex Magic and Transformer etc. I also can't really get my head around the likes of Dido, Eminem, and Robbie Williams having any place in a top 200. Thats just ridiculous.

I'm supprised Public Enemy was so far down, a trully groundbreaking act. And I'd have thought Iggy & the Stooges - Funhouse, imo would be there somewhere, or even some Ramones.

Yeah. I think those albums may have been in the list I was talking about. (2005 I think?). It was almost identical.
