Its not Vista making the laptop run like a dog. Its sony and the mega amounts of Crapware they put on it. They really take the mick with all of their kit and crapware. They make dell installations look positively slimline!

For Dell PCs use:
Download | The PC Decrapifier
And there will be no Coffee Agent - unless it has Whisky in it.
Which laptop is it? Not model range, but which actual model?
Shouldn't be too difficult to get XP on it. Just need to install some drivers, as it sounds like you can't set the drive controller to IDE emulation.
No, because it came pre-installed with vista.
Is it reasonable for Sony to support NetBSD, again no, because your friend paid his money and made his choice.
Its like the motherboard in my last build, i ended up going for a slightly lesser value for money one, just because i knew that it would play well with NetBSD. If 99.999% of sony users don't want it, why is it of value for them.
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)
I find it totally disgusting that Sony don't have the drivers up for download like any other hardware manufacturer. It is just wrong, if I were you I would be phoning up their customer services and having a huge moan, it really isn't on.
If any one would like to lend a hand/has been through this before the model is:
Sony Vaio
VGN NR10E.

Have you tried the Intel Matrix Storage Manager SATA/RAID drivers mentioned here? It would seem someone else has had the same problem. The link to the files in that thread contain what you'd need for Vista to see the drive - XP isn't supported by Sony's drivers.
right it's an 965M chipset so you need the following drivers to integrate into an xp install as said earlier Mobile Intel® 965 Express Chipset Family 32-bit Floppy Configuration Utility for Intel® Matrix Storage Manager , that should get it installed
you will also want the intel inf drivers and probably the matrix storage ones aswell also the intel graphics drivers by the looks of it , should all be on this page apart from the inf installer which is here Download Search Results
audio is Realtek High Definition , which is easy to get direct from realtek
memory card drivers and mouse pad drivers from this page should work , you'll want the MEMORY_CARD_READERWRITER.ZIP for the driver and MEMORY_STICK_ICON.ZIP to fix the wrong explorer icon you'll notice and for the mouse both Files POINTING.ZIP and then TOUCHPAD_REGISTRY_PATCH.ZIP

Sony messing customers around? Well I never....
Seriously though, not posting drivers on their website for customers should be a criminal offense, its not like they haven't got the servers for it.
