Interesting, the plot thickens
it obviously some employee has done it, to add some 'life' to the display, no doubt he is now or soon will be a former employee...
The article has now been updated with an official response from John Lewis.
oh such sweet warming words.
I'm amazed lawyers are ever able to chat someone up.

Read more.Following our recent coverage of an illegal movie being played on an Apple iMac at a John Lewis store, a John Lewis representative states the company is thankful that the matter was brought to its attention.
anyone else thinking it would have been better to have kept quiet about this, found some more instances of it happening then broke the news on all of them at once?

same with me and my housemates, as soon as we get caught we will implement a no priacy policy LOL..."but officer, we didnt know it was illegal, the file never said that the owner did not own the distribution/ copyright on it...we will employ a policy to double check before downloading anything else!
do you think that would be sufficient to get me off the hook?
"In a perfect world... spammers would get caught, go to jail, and share a cell with many men who have enlarged their penises, taken Viagra and are looking for a new relationship."
Some how I think that wouldn't work for you hehe.
Interesting response, pretty much what I thought they'd say. I find it slightly surprising they only mention the one shop, not the whole chain. You'd think they'd be covering their bases and checking all of the stores they run. Maybe they have just didn't mention it?Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We have fully investigated the incident and the shop has removed and destroyed the clip. We have also taken the necessary steps to ensure that the replication and publication of pirate material in any form does not take place in our shops. This incident is not reflective of our policy and we take very seriously the copyright laws and would not intentionally break any of these rules or regulations."
Well, you and your housemates aren't a business, so those sections of the Copyright Act that would make this a criminal matter, and therefore of interest to the "officer" don't apply to you as they do to JL. But by that same token, those sections of the Copyright law require that you knew, or had reason to believe, the copy/copies in question were illegal.
So in brief, yes, if your claim to know nothing about it being illegal was credible and believed (and if you were in business), it would work for you too. But if there's a single file on your machine that's illegal, your claim would have a lot more credibility that if there were hundreds or thousands.
Ignorance of the law is not an excuse, but in most situations, a lack of intent to commit the offence is.
