Re: The Compost bin is working!!!

My missus has just persuaded me to get a herb garden growing for her....doubt I'm going to be digging up the front garden anytime soon (it's South facing, but I know we'll have some pikey's walking off with our green stuff first time anything decent grows), so I'm going to be putting some boxes out for the time being. Guess I should get a composter going at the same time....

I'll be coming to your green fingered individuals at some point in the future for tips if that's alright, as I've been known to cause the demise of plants from a fair distance.

Re: The Compost bin is working!!!

my Dad gave me a great tip for composting leaves...

Put them in a black bin bag, tie it up tight, and put it somewhere for a year,....mine is behind the shed, out of site.

Next year, take the bag to the bit of garden where you want to use it and slit the bag open, and empty it onto your garden bed...and dig it in.

    Done

great way to get rid of leaves

Re: The Compost bin is working!!!

does anyone with a composter have the following problem..
little tiny flies, look a bit like midges, every time my mum opens lid of composter they all fly out and she gets bit alot, they've also moved into the house and living on the house plants. we don't know how to get rid of them, we've tried pressure washing the empty bin a few times last year, but they came back a few weeks later, don't know what else to try..

we have two composters and they're in both.. one is next to a large pond, the other nearer the house, (before you suggest to move it away from house, when they were both at bottom of garden (40ft away) the bugs still got in the house..

    anyway... any suggestions??

I have mine ready to go in this coming weekend - i am sorting out the back bit of my garden and will be doing it then. Someone said also worth putting in shredded paper (cross shredded into tiny bits) every now and then.

There is a company ( Green Cone )that makes garden composters that allow you to compost cooked food waste as well as the usual kitchen\garden waste.
Pretty nifty if you are a keen composter.

Anything you can do to reduce the quantity of waste going to landfill is superb. We recycle and compost, and it reduces the number of black bags going out so much, and takes so little effort, I don't get why more people don't do it

Re: The Compost bin is working!!!

Yup, I've got a mate who has a giant compost bin at the bottom of his garden. He was amazed how it never quite got full... until he moved it one day and found out that rats were pulling stuff out of the bottom of it somehow via a number of burrows. Goddamn rats!

I don't put any black bags in the bin

I use carrier bags from the supermarket, and the highstreet. I don't think, no in fact i'm sure I've never bought rubbish bags in my life (heavy duty ones for DIY excepted)

Ah fair enough, I recycle the carrier bags instead of reusing them
