It's my birthday really soon,
I'm leaning heavily towards getting a Nintendo Wii...
But what else could I spend a similar amount of money on for my birthday?
Thanks
Josh

This little Josh went to market
And this little Josh stayed at home
This little Josh had roast beef
And this little Josh had none.
But this little Josh went Wii, Wii, Wii, Wii all the way home!

The Wii is definately a lot of fun, but not so much as a single player thing. It's something to use when your mates come over.

If you're already aiming for a Wii then go grab one. I succumb recently, after having waited several months for fairly priced stocks to reappear, and haven't regretted the purchase one iota. It's made for a great additional console and with the right add-ons (component cables, memory card along with a classic controller and an extra Wiimote) it's great fun. Being able to catch up on older titles (R-Type, etc) is a welcome bonus.
Is Amazon the cheapest place to buy one? (£179 with wii sports)
Or can I find this price / deal in my local woolworths, Dixons, Comet, etc?
Thanks
Josh

I bought mine from Amazon as they had it in stock, however I would have used Play with my QuidCo account and got a bit of cash back if I'd had the chance. I very much doubt you'll find it cheaper than the RRP. Perhaps there's a bundle out there which would suit you?
I agree the only way you'll get a significant discount is through a bundle. Have a look through these and see if anything takes your fancy. Otherwise amazon is good.
If you prefer to buy from the high street then you should find it for retail price. Not sure if stock will have trickled down to all stores yet though...it wasn't long ago you couldn't find a Wii if your life depended on it...
My Wii has pretty much been exclusively a multiplayer console so far, but I think that will change when Mario Kart comes out on April 11th.
If I put rechargable batteries in the wii-mote - can they be charged by plugging the remotes into the wii - or do I need one of those wii-mote docking station charger things? Thanks

Normally you can't plug a remote into a wii... so that's a no
For my 40th i got a Wii
my wife calls me a big kid
lol
she never used to play games and she uses th Wii
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
Normal AA rechargeables wont work (at least mine didnt) - presumably they need 1.5V rather than 1.2V or whatever the difference is. There are plenty of docking station + battery pack sets around now, probably a good idea as the remotes do eat batteries quickly. Mine is a joytech pack but I dont think its any better than any of the other options around.
Get a wii! They're fun!
Assuming you have friends and/or family that like you
FWIW, I've been using standard Energizer 2500 mAh NiMH batteries in my Wii remotes. They work fine, and they last bloody ages. It's worth spending a bit more for a higher mAh rating. You can actually get higher than 2500 though.
Just make sure you have a spare pair on charge/charged at all times though
