Nice places to have lunch in central london (but not restaurants)

I'm going to be in london on Friday, and the topic of where to have lunch has remained fairly prominent.. so anyone got some places to get lunch - be it as humble as a sandwich - that's decent but preferably not stupidly expensive? I'm not really after a restaurant or anything like that, just a nice bite to eat.

Take-out stuff would be preferred, but not essential

    (lousy vB "good" bug)

My old Mum lives in Lambeth and I'm sure she'd knock you up a couple of rounds of cheese and tomato if you ask her nicely

if you want good nosh, thats not expensive, and thats often a takeout.

I know loads around the old city (monument area). There are lots of people working there who want nice ~£5 lunch.

Starting from momument theres this excelent italian deli + cafe, £3.50 for a great lasania, and a whole host of other italian type nosh. Then theirs Fuzzies grub, which i think might of put their prices up, but it used to be £5 for a full roast. Ladenhall market has a mirraid of food places, alot smaller than borough market, but a lot cheaper, a nice lady has a chinease food stand, much better than the crappy ones you get around tottenham court road for takeout chinease for £3.50. Then you've got Chopped who do excelent soup + salads. Grazing which have wounderful pies. K10 do an excelent pork katsu.

Man i miss the 'old' city.

But it really depends where abouts in london you want to be.

There's a great Sandwich shop on Roger ST, just off Grays Inn Road.

What area are you going to be in? I presume you won't be hiking halfway across London just for lunch

Some of the stalls at Borough Market (near London Bridge station) do food - last time I was there the local fish monger was knocking up cajun fish wraps (either some white fish or salmon IIRC) and the Spanish stall usually does something too. It all sells out quite quickly though and isn't cheap (not bad for what it is though - less than £5 a head).

Borough Market is somewhat expensive. Thats not to say its not full of nice things, but there are many cheaper nice things just accross the bridge. Borough Market seams to rely on tourist custom a lot more, where as the places in ledenhall and around it rely on daily worker money. One demands a lot more for their dosh.
