Re: £5 per day to live on Poll

£35 per week, you could easy survive on that. even have enough change for a bottle of white lightning, for when the bird comes over for a shag.

heres my budget for the week,

£23 for rent, council tax included its a shared house with 10 of us, 4 bed house with living room as another bedroom, 2 in each room
£2 per person each week for bills. gas is never on, and electic for the TV/PC only.
cook on a trangia, also provides heating sort of.
£5 for a two hit bag of smack to keep out the cold on those very cold nights
£3.50 for a bottle of cider for the weekend
£1.11 for food 4 sliced bread 21p each, 10 cans of beans 3p each, 1 can sardines for the omeaga 3 18p.
save 30p towards clothing. save it up to buy from charity shop
    keep 9p for emergencies

Re: £5 per day to live on Poll

I think you could do it but it would depend on whether a tent/shelter, sleeping bag was included in the cost. £5 on food is easily achievable although you might get some stares whilst sorting through the Tesco "reduced section." You'd need soap and a towel but there are plenty of public places that you could wash and shave in.

Bloody Chancellor has increased the cost of Special Brew though so that might make it a bit harder, the bastard!

This bloke was able to do it. He lived on a roundabout in Wolverhampton and became famous with his own facebook page.

Re: £5 per day to live on Poll

I personally could, because I live at home, so food, bills etc aren't really much of an issue. Just 20quid a week to get to uni and back does me. A fiver a day would be an upgrade for me at the minute as I don't have a job

Not a chance. £150 a month wouldn't get you a roof over your head let alone food and bills on top of that.

Re: £5 per day to live on Poll

I find it hard to belive that 6 people think its impossible, There Building a Supercollider thats gonna make mini black holes (maybe) but its impossible to live in the UK on a fiver a day.

Hmmm, maybe i should have added Improbable (if thats a word) as well impossible
You could survive on £5 a day, but you couldn't *live* on £5 a day. Although i don't think anyone would last very long if that's all you ever had (£5/day and nothing else).

He lived down the road from me. Why he was a 'local hero' around here I'm not quite sure. I'd much rather spend my time with the war vets, but never mind.

I used to spend a fair bit of time up Wolves when I was younger, so I'd met him. We went over once and took him sooe food and a drink. He was a ignorant git, didn't even say thanks. Really rude to everyone apparently.

Re: £5 per day to live on Poll

Accommodation is the thing that really makes this difficult. I'd personally say it was impossible, unless you wanted to live in the scummiest part of town sharing a room with 5 other people.

If someone said £5/day without accommodation that would be relatively easy as I did that at Uni, but with somewhere to stay I'd say that it's going to be very hard. I suppose you could camp out in the woods or something, but that's probably not the greatest thing in this weather

well the scummiest part of town round here, is about £25 to £30 pppw for a room in a shared house. So sharing with 5 other people in the same room would make your rent £4.16 to £5 per wek.

I guess the bottom line is those who think its "impossible" are spoilt, and have not lived through extream hard times.

Re: £5 per day to live on Poll

Yes it is possible in theory. In fact you could probably live on £1 a day by sharing a room with 20 people. Basically, it all depends how much of a sacrifice you're willing to make and where you live. Whilst I could in theory live with 5 other people, it's certainly not something that I would do by choice.

I lived in Hull for a few years and rent there was EXTREMELY cheap (some areas £20/week or less) if you didn't mind sharing the neighbourhood with drug dealers and thieves (ah what a place that was).

I wouldn't want to share a room with 5 other people, but then I haven't lived through extreme hard times.

Sharing a *room* with 5 other people? Presumably this is how you live right now and all of us spoilt folk don't know what we're missing. I'm sure it saves on the heating bills too.

I'm sure it's technically possible to live that way - and necessary for some people in some parts of the world - but it's hardly necessary here in the UK is it? Hence for the minimum standard of living most people would accept here in the UK it's impossible to live on £5 a day.

Homeless shelters probably have a better ratio than 5 per room

Most cases we don't eat at work regardless of how long the shift is and do with 1 meal per day (decent sized meal) which we have on an evening.

Going on what I have put there I think £5 per day now would be nowhere near enough to get by, even if the council paid your rent and council tax with the cost of food, gas and electric alone you would barely be able to survive.

Its about time that the minimum wage covered the cost of inflation as well as giving a little extra in your pocket each month I personally feel. I work excessive hours and so does my wife and we have just enough to make ends meet, we have no time for each other as we are both at work virtually all of the time.

We need some major reforms here, we are taxed on literally everything. Road Tax, Council Tax, Tax on certain types of food and not forgetting the Income Tax. Thinking about that, after income tax and council tax alone between me and my wife we pay around £450 per month (roughly, not exact) in just taxes alone.

So I would have to say no to the £5 per day!
