Plus do people really get scammed this way?
As I said before, the information they ask for is enough for some companies and agencies to authorise more information to be given out. If you are planning to jovially investigate, never give anything remotely truthful.

Sadly real people do get scammed like this regularly. The percentage of people who fall for these e-mails is very low, but the number sent out is so high as to make them worthwhile trying. Be similarly aware of course that identical scams can and do happen by phone, which may feel more safe than when online.

Edit: The wiki article on the most common e-mail scam has too many links to authoritative journalism regarding people who have fallen for these for me to pick any single one to link to, so go look!

Plus how did the Charlie Brown (nice name) guy get my email? Probably from some website I trusted and registered at?
There are a number of good sources available to them. Any website were your e-mail address is in plain text (even if mangled a little, it's not too hard to fix) is of course a good source. The website may well be good, but they could well have hacked in and stolen the information. A very common source is also e-mail address books being read by trojans and the like.

They usually just send an email back with similar wording and demands, no matter what I ask them to do

If you provide them with some incomplete (fake) info, rather than just emailing them questions, you might have some more luck

havent had time too read through but they can open a bank accoutn and loads of other accounts in your name, they can request a change of address for say a bank so they can get your card even.
