Keeper of the Gates of Hell
agreed! no cooking food from now on, its all raw meat and beer!!
But electricity comes from gas anyway.
Gas -> heat -> electricity -> heat
is probably less efficient than
Gas -> heat
But then again the filament of a kettle is completely submerged, whereas with gas lots of the energy is wasted heating air. If we could burn the gas underwater...

Power, power... The gas may be less efficient than electric but it costs less but it doesn't draw electricity except for that tiny spark That's what my post was about. But then again a kettle can't cook food can it? Then if you'd bring up an electric hob then it'd still lose heat to the air like gas but cost more.
well think of it as saving you using your central heating
Zak, Just out of interest now you have almost worked out how much electricity you can save how much do you estimate you can save monthly or quarterly?
Cool stuff Zak, I've been throwing the switch pretty much every night on my PC gear now anyway, I'm guessing with PC, speakers, 2 external HDD's and a TFT that I'm pulling near around the 50 watts area with it all in standby after reading the results you've got.
Great post. many thanks indeed

Next time your near mine pop it in, be interesting how much my setup uses as it all comes to the PC's via my UPS, which incidentally always seems to be filtering high voltage...
19" Hyundai CRT - 9W Idle - 60 - 75W while on.
It seems 9 is the magic idle/standby number.
could you test a lamp with a standard bulb in?
and then test it again with an 'energy saving' bulb in aswell and see how much you actually save?
could be interesting..
erm........
Gives matty an ounce of common sense........
You ever wondered what the 100W or 60W meant?
