Rofl, i can believe that because i have seen similar incidents myself

"I have never been in an accident deary but i have seen plenty in my rear view mirror"

If old people cant be trusted not to just randomly stop at the top of an escalator, then scowl as crowds of non-brain deads are inadvertently pushed into them, how can they be trusted to drive cars

The number of times i have been driving down a country lane and seen a car driven by a brain dead coffin dodger, who is usually accompanied by an equally demented passenger, just randomly stand on their breaks for no reason... unbelievable. I have learnt to triple the usual safe stopping distance when the car in front is being driven your average gardent centre visitor.

On the off chance that there any old people reading this, fyi you need not slow down in a 60 limit to 25mph in anticipation of a garden centre turn off when it is still 4 miles away

Re: The elderly on the roads.

I don't have a driving license but I got hit by an old man once... he ran into the back of my car... then he had the cheek to run off (I pulled over down a little bit down the road as it was quite busy and didn't want to hold up traffic)...

The funny thing is that this was during a driving lesson

Re: The elderly on the roads.

Old people use their car about once a week to go down to the co-op.
Also would amount of old people who hold licenses but no longer drive (for what ever reason, perhaps living in a home or disabled) count towards this statistic that they are safer?
this probably why statistically old people are less likely to be involved in an accident.
Where as most of us have to use a car every day.

Was about to say the same thing Ramedge, old people around here just grab a mobility pass, use the buses and leave their cars rusting on the road.

Re: The elderly on the roads.

Luckily today, I used my car only for the journey to work, then home, and then to sell some dance vinyls for DJ use to a friend, so did not encounter any elderly folks on the road, and my road rage from the previous day did not occur again.

To be completely honest I was absoutely livid last night due to me being blamed for avoiding an accident. I felt the V sign I was given was un-needed and I almost let my road rage get the best of me and challenged the man who insulted me. Which would have led to an assault charge consdering the agressive mood I was in after I saw those V's.

Although, today, on the exact same road, I almost ended up in a head on collison again!

Some idiot, 40-50 years old, swerved out into my lane, for no reason at all, managed to swing his vehicle out opf my path then crashed into the back of a car stopped at the traffic lights. I drove past later and the police were there taking statements. I felt obliged to go and ask him why he swerved into my path, but I felt I did not want to make matters worse for him and didn't bother.

It's not just the elderly I now realise.

Re: The elderly on the roads.

Not all Elderly are that bad.
Some are old, their hearing an eyesight going. At least they have an excuse.

Boy Racers? No excuse at all.

The cinema I go to has speed bumps along the main road going through the carpark.
At night these boy racers avoid them by driving through the disabled parking spaces next to the shops in the same retail park. They are really dangerous.

On some of the disabled parking spots are real thin bollards. The kind which normally lay flat. Someone left one padlocked so it stood upright.
And some boy racer came driving fast through the parking spaces one night and really made a mess of his car by driving into the bollard. Hilairous.

How many elderly people have you heard doing this? At least most of the old people crash at slow speeds.

Re: The elderly on the roads.

The thing is though, boy racers usually get done eventually so I kind of feel like I can rely on the law to take care of them. But oldies scare me because they aren't really focused on by the police and are ignored by speed cameras etc. So I worry that they are just left to it because it's a sensitive subject and nobody wants to do anything about it. I can understand why too because even if there was an oldie who was a terrible driver, it would still be sad to take their license away, because getting about is a nightmare without a car

And the bus pass is of little consolation really. They go so fast and the g-forces on busses is nuts. And they are often filled with dodgy gits. And it's just not an ideal form of transport when you have to carry some shopping or something :/

I think the only fair option, for people once they reach the age of about 65 or so, is to be issued with jet packs.

Re: The elderly on the roads.

I'll admit that for the first couple of years after passing my test I did like to rag the car around a lot and looking back, did some pretty stupid maneuvers that could easily have resulted in an accident. These kind of drivers rage me nowadays because I like to think i'm a sensible on the road now, however the old folk that potter around under the speed limit do really get my goat. I reckon if we took all the pensioners off the road tomorrow then there would be a serious drop in road rage and stupid overtakes and other dangerous maneuvers that are often indirectly caused by the oldies

Re: The elderly on the roads.

You should try going on a test drive with an old person. I did it for years, as a Car Salesman, and nothing prepares you for the terror, the near misses of the random lacks of judgement.

I hated that part of my job....it was ....dangerous. Reaction speeds when you're very old become minutes, not split seconds. I have used the handbrake on more than one occassion to prevent a smacked up bumper in traffic while old dear looks at the pedals to remember where they are!! LOOKS at them.....for ages...while we roll off.

Re: The elderly on the roads.

    Old people... safe?

How many young drivers have driven the wrong way down the motorway

BBC NEWS | England | Wiltshire | U-turn motorway driver given ban

Terrified drivers forced to crash into barriers after grandmother drives 15 miles down the wrong side of motorway | the Daily Mail (Mail link, apologies for that)

"I have no idea how I ended up going the wrong way on the motorway. It is very confusing with all of the new signs.

"At first I didn't think there was anything wrong. It was quiet on the road. Then I saw cars coming towards me.

"It was quite scary and I didn't know what to do. There was nowhere for me to turn around so I just kept going."

To be fair, while it's often the elderly who do that kind of thing, they do it very, very slowly which mitigates quite a lot of the danger!
