Re: Hard drive failure three days before project hand-in

Well there are always data recovery firms ... Just how valuable is that file you saved though?

Which reminds me, I need to backup stuff. Heck I need to get another server and NAS box, the 120GB one I have is already full up with stuff.

Hey Steve, what proggies do you use to backup?

What if the backup of the backup that you backed up from another backup fails?

If you have that many backups fail, a higher power is against you and you might aswell have none!

Re: Hard drive failure three days before project hand-in

    I'm pretty safe.

C: - RAID 0. Nothing important (game saves and other stuff I want to keep are done every night by SyncToy automatically).

    D: - Single 500GB - everything important

    E: - Single 500GB - backup of D:

G: - Pen drive - all college work goes here which is copied to my PC every day when I get home using an xcopy batch file (xcopy batch is temporary, might change that to SyncToy/RoboCopy)

I used to run a RAID 5 whilst at uni, never saved my bacon.

What really payed dividends was the UPS.

NAS? For a single PC backup? Hell no.

All you need is a spare 5 1/4" drive bay and one of these. Beyond essential.

I have 3 HDDs in my PC - My Documents and photos are backed up on to one of my other internal drives and occasionally DVDs, and all of my files (inc the above, plus audio and video files) are reguarly backed up on to my external HDD using SyncToy.

Re: Hard drive failure three days before project hand-in

Personally, I back up all my critical documents to an online store because you can usually trust they have far better backup routines than you would. Not to mention it was a great help at uni because I could upload the file, get to uni and spend a few hours in the library working.

I'm not sure I would do that because you are still using the PC's PSU. I prefer something totally independent power wise, e-sata is quite handy for external hdd. I back everything up to an external including OS and any really, really important stuff also goes onto a usb stick which is put in a fire proof box. Maybe a bit OTT but I know I've got everything covered.

Re: Hard drive failure three days before project hand-in

    you backup your OS?

    hmm.. never thought of that.

What are the benefits of backing up your OS? Is it just convinience/second option or does it serve some other useful purpose?

    Just convinience then..

Out of interest: what are the legal implications with EULA and everyhting else I failed to read properly when I installed Windows?

Well, by the same token a dodgy power supply from the wall (I'm sure we've all seen lights flickering) can have the same effect, unless you go through a UPS.

I'm not an electrician by any means, and I'm sure someone will point and laugh, but even if you disregard fluctuating power, you've got the possibility of total power cuts remaining, killing off your data just as nicely as a decent PSU failure.

Re: Hard drive failure three days before project hand-in

The array is rebuilt now. Seems the disk isn't dead. Either it had a bad sector that the firmware has since remapped, or it simply fell out of sync due to some transient fault.

Oh well, at least I prompted a few people to assess their backup strategies.
