Well you have a house and you dont really know how to demolish it properley but if you knew how it was built for e.g. where the supporting walls are you could bring it down around your ankles.

The code has been leaked out so now the way is open for goits everywhere to create nast virus's to exploit weaknesses- just like with blaster

maybe security companys (a/v program writers) will use it as an opertunity for a new product - patches!
i use win2k, so im a bit worryed. but im still nto using a AV app, the only way i could get a virus from somehting i download, is if a trustable download site has a dodgy file, in which case a lot mroe people will have problems than just me. AV are too restrictive to be any good, and need updating constantly. i dont see anyreson to trust free ones, and im not going to be paying for somehting that will just frustrate me.
worms are different though. if i didnt have this hardware router + visit WU site regulaly, i would have had a problem.
this may be an effort by m$ to force business users onto its TCPA-compliant palidin OS when its released, and if most buisnesses decide to change, then most other things will change with them

Nope, it doesnt mean you have got the source code. What the OS is, is compiled code, binary code that makes the OS work.

Oh, and those wondering if it is complete, it isnt, according to reports there are upwards of a few million lines of code within Windows 2K+. Roughly 40Gb worth of code.

No way is compressed code of 40Gb going to fit within the 203.85MB download that is doing the rounds on the p2p networks.

reports i've seen indicate 13.5 million lines of source from NT4 and 2000 are in the wild. NT4 is 16 million lines long, 2000 is 35 million lines long. beyond that i'm not sure of the breakdown.

    Its likely to have the opposite effect, say that;

people will see how bad the MS coding was, then decided against running MS products...

directhex, all in the fabled Win2k source ZIP file?

This is so cool! I hope it does lots of damage to M$, but I hope not too many companies will suffer though, as most staff I guess would only know how to use Windows!

I'm off to start learning Linux... anyone know of a good d/l? I heard Mandrake was quite good!

Ooer :/ Out of interest what is windows compiled in?

And if I was cynical, I'd say microsoft planned this to force people to quickly upgrade to a newer MS OS instead of a planned transition to linux.

Well, I'm just glad my firewall is linux - HACK THAT!

Ironically, my Linux firewall will probably now be FAR more secure than a windows machine on the end of a net connection, and Linux has always has the source available, lol.

    Things aren't looking good.

That's a bit of a short-sighted view IMO - the more likely victim of any damage from malware created through knowledge of the source code would be the users.
Microsoft would be more likely to suffer reputation damage (though there are those that would ask "what reputation?" ).

I would guess, though, that in addition to the original / post release source code for Windows 2000, you would also need the source code for (or to reverse engineer) Service Pack 4 and the subsequent hotfixes in order to create anything that might be malicious and actually work.

I do wish, though, that they would put the power of the PC back in the control of those that know what they are doing - high-street PCs should be sold with a pre-installed, pre-configured OS.
Windows can be hardened, but out of the box it's horribly open to abuse.

My neighbour got a Packard Bell PC from a high street store and NTL came round to install broadband through his STB - using a USB modem.

File and printer sharing was enabled on this box, even though it was not (ever) LAN connected, so I explained he was potentially sharing all his files to anyone who stumbled across his public IP - and the supplier of the PC and NTL installation engineer never even mentioned or offered to sell/install a personal firewall or told him how to keep his AV up to date.

These are the people more likely to be affected by malicious gits or malware.

So that means everyone who's got a warez version of windows is in trouble It probably tracks what software you've got, what downloads, all your data and information and so forth.

What the hell has a software porting company got to do with things? LOL.

Edit - Ah, read the /. post about it now. Curious.
