    edit:

    Neowin has learned of shocking and potentially devastating news. It would appear that two packages are circulating on the internet, one being the source code to Windows 2000, and the other being the source code to Windows NT. At this time, it is hard to establish whether or not full code has leaked, and this will undoubtedly remain the situation until an attempt is made to compile them. Microsoft are currently unavailable for comment surrounding this leak so we have no official response from them at the time of writing.

    This leak is a shock not only to Neowin, but to the wider IT industry. The ramifications of this leak are far reaching and devastating. This reporter does not wish to be sensationalist, but the number of industries and critical systems that are based around these technologies that could be damaged by new exploits found in this source code is something that doesn't bare thinking about.

    We ask that for the wider benefit of the IT community that members and readers support Microsoft by forwarding anything they know about the leak to the Microsoft's Anti-Piracy department

    nothing good can come of this. the openource people WILL touch this with a barge pole - in order to send it flying as far from themselves as they can get it. only exploit and virus people will use this. something evil this way comes.

    The fact that XP is so closely related to 2000 also gives users of more modern operating systems reason to worry, I'd say.

    If, of course, this rumour is true.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    did you not see the news the other night about microshaft releasing a patch to a problem they've known about for about 6 months, yet released a patch only this week to prevent it...could explain things a little.
    hey, why don't we all at hexus design and release our own software? for one I think we'd do a better job of actually finishing it before its released...!

    Aye this could be very very very bad :/

    Time to batten down the hatches (get your strictest firewall settings on) and make sure you've got more AV running than you can shake a stick at

    Yeah it is actually out - there haven't been any reports of anyone compiling it yet though to see if it's complete
    Hopefully SOME good will come of it though..

    Could this be a cynical "time to upgrade your systems to the more secure Microsoft Windows xxxxx" type leak?

    I don't understand, if you've got the OS doesn't that mean you've got the source code?

    No, because with the OS, the code is compiled etc so that you cannot see the raw code, source *is* the raw code, so you can see every function, variable etc in the windows code.

    With the source code available, everything is wide open, and makes coding exploits much easier by exposing bad programming habits, possible backdoors etc etc
