Re: If you are not planning to stay in the UK all of your working life, where to?

I haven't read all 6 pages, got to about 3 and then skipped ahead

I wouldn't mind moving to say Germany (for the food and wine mainly) and then maybe russia, just for somewhere completely different! Moscow is meant to be a really great city for culture etc, but it just depends on how people react to people from the west n such from the cold war
Germany is my main choice, I learnt the basics last year at school, but if not, they practically all speak English. Germans normally have a great sense of humour aswell. Just seems like a fun and decent country with a slightly less stupid government Also, i want to go to the giant VW vending machine they have over there in Wolfsburg or where ever it is

    If leaving extended family & friends behind were not an issue;

Canada is meant to be nice - might go there
USA - possibly but not sure which part
Dubai is hot and would love to work there, but don't think I could hack it long term.
Australia would be nice, but it's way too far on the other side of the world - mrs & kids would miss family back home.

I really would like to live in America, somewhere like California, but that's just a distant dream. I doubt I'll ever have the money to actually do it. For now I'll stick to the north of England.

Other than that, Australia looks nice.

One thing I am not too keen about South-East Asia (I know it's not mentioned on this page, but I am pretty sure it was mentioned somewhere before), is having to deal with earthquakes. All too often I check the news, and see 'Earthquake in China/Taiwan/Japan (the latest victim)'.

Re: If you are not planning to stay in the UK all of your working life, where to?

I have lived, in the past 5 years, in Abu Dhabi, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Luxembourg.

I would rate the lifestyle in the order listed, but point out that Abu Dhabi is not Dubai. Dubai is a traffic jam. The Sheik Zayed highway (Main road across town) can move as slowly as 1 Km/h during the rush hours (about 5 -6 hours per day). Abu Dhabi is a peaceful, relaxed place with great beaches and as safe as houses. There is masses of things to do, and eating out is really, really cheap. The only down side is that salaries are too low now, as they are paid in dollars (or toilet paper, as they are known). You also need a liquor license to buy booze, which can take a while to get. It is also pretty hot in summer.

Switzerland is wonderful. I lived in Zurich and the shops, restaurants, cinemas, transport, climate etc. are all great. There is something standoffish about the Swiss though, and their attitude to cars was a real pain in the arse.

France is like a buffet. Where you are makes a huge difference. Paris is the best city in the world, but very expensive and you need French. I live now near Carcassonne, in the South, and my quality of life is pretty close to idyllic, but again, French is necessary, and there's not much nearby in terms of infrastructure. No cinemas in English, no decent music venue, nothing but great countryside, great food and wine and great climate.

Belgium is also a bit specific, but if you live in Brussels or Antwerp you will eat and drink better than anywhere else in the world. There is a weirdness to the Belgians that makes life more fun. They have great bars and loads to do. In Brussels there is a forest partly within the city limits which makes you feel less urbanised than you might otherwise, living in a big city. Weather and traffic are both horrendous.

Luxembourg is cute, small and manageable. Work for the European Parliament or the EIB and you are quids in. No taxes and anincredible benefits package. Downside is that since the great rock bar 'Studio A' closed there is virtually no fun in town. Liquid and Rox are the only two fun bars left. It's kind of sad when you know every good bar in town. The infrastructure is perfect though. English cinemas, incredible supermarkets, excellent beer. Housing is pricey though.

    (Thanks Evilmunky)

    Whats your story Marcos?
I've lived in Portugal and Venezuela when i was younger, came to the UK when i was 8 but i've never really fully integrated into this society, i get on with it, but still looking for a better place, i dont like the direction this country is going in.

I'm going to finish Uni soon and have to decide the next step, so probably going to spend a year or so getting some financial cushion and then doing a big move.

I think i want to spend some time in the US or Canada, i think its worth trying

Here's a thread bump and a little motivation. My Green Card was approved today, and I'm officially a permenent US resident. I hope this is proof to you all that the only thing stopping you from achieving your dreams is you. Anyone else have any progress?

(and for the record, Oregon has more breweries per person than anywhere else on the planet, I don't eat fish, and the local World Market stocks chocolate hob-nobs and a variety of other British goodies! ($7 a pack... )
