    Had enough with this country

    Sorry for the rant but here goes;

I've just finished my exams for year 2 and thought id celebrate with my uni friends and go to my local club which ive never done with them before. Ive been to this club every week for the last 5 years and probably givene them upto 4grand.

Tonight i show my ID, get let in, and get searched (which is a great idea). I realise as i empty my pockets that ive got my pocket penknife with me. (the really small one, #10 one). So i instantly say to the guy, " ive got this, im sorry but it was a mistake" So he takes it from me and gives it to the receptionist.

So i ask the guy, can i pick it up as i leave. Guy says no, fair enough, so i ask him " is it bette ri pick up tomorrow instead. Hes grabs me by the arm and SHUVS me out the club. IM gobsmacked!!

After a few words i mange to speak to the manager who goes and asks this bouncer the stroy, not believing me. The bouncer cleary gives a bs story and the manager says to me " Your not getting in the club and uve been aggressive to the bouncer so go home"

Now pride myself on being polite and none aggressive/chavy and this is how i get treated. I owned up the mistake and gave the guy my penknife( which had a 1 inch blade on it)

They show no leeway and basically treat u in a inhumane way.

This kind of behaviour makes me want to movev country (canada/vancouver) and get a job there after my degree. I literally dont deserve that treatment and am now in the worst mood ive been in a long time.

    Rant over

I'm sure that some clubs in Canada have surly bouncers too ...
There may be valid reasons to emigrate but I don't think that's one

Well, mate, you went to a club with a knife.

Only an ikkle knife, and by accident, but still. Getting it taken off you and not getting it back isn't the worst that could have happened.

The fact you could have done more with a broken glass or bottle would make me feel pretty pissed off. But i've had worse just for telling a bouncer that the brand new at the time photo driving licence was a valid form of ID, to which 3 of them laid into me in the street until the manager came out and the cops arrived

    Lovely world we live in

It is one of the facts of life that not many graduates or monks become bouncers. It's not the sort of job where intelligence or kindness really work as a unique selling point. It really isn't surprising that a bouncer treated you like a POS; he probably treats his mum like that.

Bouncers are the same everywhere*. Best bet is to avoid contact with them as much as possible.

    * Caveat - some bouncers are university rugby players making a bit of spare cash, they are the exception that proves the rule though.

You know little about doormen then or grads by the sounds of it. To think grads are more intelligent for possessing, what is likely to be a meaningless degree is a bit archaic now.
We all know that anyone, if the mood takes them, can get a degree now.

I actually found your 'University Rugby Player' bouncer the worst of the lot. They actually think they are very special and should be treated as such. I also found they were the poorest at dealing with trouble, they notice very little going on and, in general, not too sharp.

Re: Had enough with this country

By the way, I am in Tanzania at the moment, working at the Bank of T. and I met the British Ambassador last night at a formal function. I told him that I was a career expat like him and intended never to return to Blighty and he seemed apalled. "But you are British. How can you not want to return to Britain?". I told him that after his career he would be bitterly disappointed if he did return. He will miss the glamour and excitement of the high life. Silly old sod didn't believe me. His mistake. I did my best. I told him I thought he was a prat. He told me I was wise not to choose a career in the diplomatic service.

It's true though. He lives in a palace with servants and chauffeurs and puts 90% of his pay in the bank and the weather is always great and he has a big swimming pool and parties like a rap star. If he doesn't get posted somewhere better he can refuse a new posting. When he returns to his agreeable country house in Gloucestershire he will be bored off his arse. He should buy the house next door to the Embassy here and just carry on with the fun until death.

I guess it has been too long since I went anywhere near a bouncer. The only bouncers I knew were two nice rugby guys who are now a commodity derivatives dealer and a PhD student in low-temperature plasma physics. I cannot imagine either of them getting too arsey, but perhaps power goes to their heads.

Am I the only person who reads newspapers at the moment? "Big Police Crackdown On Knife Crime" etc?

Yes, it may have been a tiny blade, yes you were honest but... I dunno, maybe I'm starting to live on Daily Mail Reactionary Island. I'll get my coat.

Why, is the club having trouble making ends meet?

    No.

Did you go in with a prohibited item.

    Yes.

They asked you to leave politely, when you started complicating matters further (why should they offer a checked baggage for restricted items).

honestly some people, you know last time i went on a flight the barstards at the airport wouldn't hold onto my collection of AK-47s till i came back!

As much as I enjoy my knife collecting, I never *ever* carry in public. I mainly use the one above for odd jobs in the kitchen, but it stays in my drawer next to my swiss army penknife (cybertool).

Carrying in public, however small, means that at the back of your mind you are ready to use it (if needed) - since that option is available to you.

Therefore, don't carry - problem sorted!

What a complete and utter load of tosh. I drive a car places, that doesn't mean that I would go and use it to injure someone.

I think Splash hit the nail on the head with the reaction, the media report alot of knife crime ending in stupid kids/teens often in these so called gang feuds getting killed and you've got to expect more over reaction. It seems to me that many young people don't value life or understand death properly or have any respect for others in these circumstances.

But other than that the venue was innapropriate, it was a mistake to be carrying it about, the knife is gone, replace and move on. Better to loose it to a bouncer than have the genius of plod asking questions about it.
