Well I have had to deal with that kind of thing in the past, I find the best way is to be direct about it and firm (helps if you look like a bit of a bruiser which I do apparently). Just go round and tell them what the score is, if they give you any crap then call in the authorities. I don't mind a party now and then, hell I was playing rock band and playing on my decks with a bunch of mates until 4am last night but if it was every weekend I would probably have something to say. Week night partying is unacceptable as far as I am concerned though.

EDIT: To the below question, midnight isn't especially unreasonable for a Saturday night. If it's not something they do every weekend, of course. I think when it gets to about 2am, if it's still really rowdy then that'd be unreasonable. Unfortunately, some people won't bother to drop you a note to let you know that it's going to happen, but there you go. Environmental services won't do very much either, they'll only really bother about it if it happens more than a few times. Same with the police, and to be honest, can you blame them? Who wants to be called out in the middle of the night to a load of drunk people to tell them to turn their music down

It is a pain, we've had people in my gran's flat in london banging about on the floor above at ludicrous hours, and the council said there's very little they can do about it

You could always hope that they damage your property or something? That way you really could call the cops!
    I think its unreasonable.
    If you have kids especially.

I for one, bought my house on the premise that i could live in it in reasonable peace.

Yes he did, but he also quoted what I'd said and asked "Surely that's illegal?", then used his video taping as an illustration, presumably, of why he thought that it might be. I was answering his question, i.e. the one he actually asked, not referring to his video-taping example.

Re: next door is haveing a party...

Using pubs as a benchmark, up with us they are open to 00:00 and in many cases 01:00 at a weekend, 'clubs' are open until 02:00 or even 03:00.
They might be open, but most are in non-residential areas and will have noise limitations imposed on them by the council as part of their licence; too many complaints and they will get shut down.

Noisy neighbours are a pain in the a..e - if they are reasonable people, they will listen to your complaint and not disturb you again; on the other hand, if they carry on regardless, sometimes direct action is the only option. I don't recommend this - it's illegal - but if they have an outside electricity cabinet, it's not too difficult to open it and remove the main fuse...

That may be the case, but if they let you know and it's happening maybe once a year then i don't see why i/one should rain on someone's parade. If you've got kids then sure, it's going to be more of an issue, but then it's not on a school night (if they're of that age) and to be perfectly honest, a lot of people find living next door to kids unreasonable. And i think it works two ways, it means they can't complain if you decided to have a party.

You'll be lucky if environmental health services do anything, a friend of mine works in environmental health and she was telling me that they just send out a diary that has to be filled in for 3 weeks with dates and times of noise in order for any action to be taken and even then its not very decisive action... (this is bournemouth council but I image its a similar situation most places).

    pfft...

If my neighbours did anything like this when I have a party which is pretty much ever other weekend at the moment I'd laugh

Luckily, both sides of my house have young ladies living there so I just invite them instead which solves the issues of noise as they are round enjoying themselves till the early hours. The last one was when we got rockband for the 360 and I left for work at 8.30am, leaving them all to carry on until they either passed out or went home tired

Re: next door is haveing a party...

Every now and then, everyone is entitled to a get together.
If its on a regular basis then its just wrong.

Some people have no respect for their neighbours and its bloody irritating. Usually its only people that are still welded to their pit at 10am everyday. The 'great unwashed' are the main culprits.

I had a neighbour once that had a dog. It was good as gold when they were there. As soon as they went out it howled and barked.
I rang him at 11pm and asked him politley to sort it out but he wasnt interested and returned with his other dog (the wife) at 5am.
I got up at 7am and woke him up by banging on his fromt door.

When he came to the door i grabbed him and informed him that if it happened again i would kick his door in, strangle the dog and then he would be next.
    The dog went that day!!!

Im not a small bloke and putting the frightners on him seemed to do the trick.

The thing is, i was reasonable at first but stupid, pikey people dont understand reason.
Sometimes a good threat or partial violence is the only thing people like that understand.

And, of course, those on night shifts.

But, having done it on an irregular basis for some years in the past, if you work night shifts, you have to find some way of fitting in with the rest of the world, not expect the world to change to suit you. You can't expect people to tip-toe round all day. Apart from being an unreasonable expectation, it's unrealistic too as it ain't gonna happen.

Eyeshades and earplugs did it for me.

But loud noise at night is different, not least because many people have kids to worry about. There comes a time when anyone reasonable would at least turn the racket down. Occasional parties at weekends? Okay, when someone has one at it disturbs me, grit teeth and find the old shades and earplugs. Fortunately, it's rare round here. On a regular basis, though, is unreasonable and unacceptable behaviour.

The number of times one of the neighbours decided they needed some tree surgery done at 8:30AM after I'd got to bed at 6AM. Grrr. Chainsaws after 2 hours sleep? Arghhh! I was beginning to suspect a conspiracy. There weren't that many damn trees around. Not after they'd finished, anyway.

That's sad and satisfying at the same time. It's sad that it was necessary in the first place, when him being reasonable would have avoided the need. But it must have been so satisfying to see the expression on his face.

I know what you mean about the dogs though. My neighbours got a couple of terriers, as pups. And the same thing happened. As soon as they both (the neighbours, not the dogs) went out ..... YAP-YAP-YAP for 30-40 seconds, 10 second pause, YAP-YAP-YAP for 30 to 40 seconds, and repeat .... for eight straight hours. And for 6 straight weeks.

Then the dogs grew up a bit and it stopped. Which was a good thing, because I was feeling murderous, probably from sleep deprivation, and my breaking point was getting very close indeed.

I tried reasoning with him on a few occassions as we got on really well. Thing is, reasoning with someone that doesnt listen is impossible. He just thought i would be too nice to act..............he was wrong

As for noise during the day, it just has to be expected. When its after 11pm at night, as im sure you agree....its not acceptable.

I forgot to say.....there little daughter also had a rabbit. My cat killed it
