Iv found the yamaha 861 which looks quite impressive for £300, so i guess its which ever of the 2 comes up second hand first!

    Re: Advise needed: A/V Receivers

I can't stand the look of the Onkyo stuff either, but they kinda have the mass market sown up.

However... the new Sony receivers will be along shortly, Aug-Sep, and they're far better looking than the Onk's, and hopefully will be as good or better sounding.

We've been needing some serious competition in the £300-£600 amp range, and I hope the Sony's will do the job. If they do, there'll be bargains to be had.

    Re: Advise needed: A/V Receivers

Bah, just re-read the first post, saw the guy ask what colour it was & went along with that.

Denon is releasing a new range aug-sept time aswell which im looking forward to, should also tie in nicely with my new job starting next week & sept being the month i need to have a receiver for the start of university. Will also have a look around at the new sony line up, by september im hoping to have saved up some more money from my new job & see if i cant up the budget a bit!

    Re: Advise needed: A/V Receivers

Well i have the 605 and i love it IT really is excellent for the price. The worst thing that you can do when going for an audio setup is the look of it. I mean thats just the height of nonsense.

Surely an amp that doesnt look as good (i actually dont think the 605 looks that bad, i think it has a look which shows it means business)but that sounds great is better than an amp that looks great but sounds like ****?

    Lets be smart here.

I still advise popping along to those places i linked in one of my previous posts and having a listen to various ones.. you may change your mind about looks being better than quality..

Bit patronising, no? Surely it's his money and it's up to him how he spends it?

I do like the performance of the Onk, but I think they'll be surpassed in the next few months, so I'd rather hang off and get something that looks and sounds good.

No point having a nicely decorated abode, then plonking something that you hate the look of smack bang in the middle of it

    Re: Advise needed: A/V Receivers

To be honest i just dont want him to buy a heap of dung. He came on here for advice and i have gave him mine. Doesn't mean he has to take it though, but as tesco says. "Every little helps".

The Onkyo might be surpassed but so is everything after "a couple of months". Sometimes you just have to take the plunge. I honestly don't mind the look of it. But everyones taste is different.

    Re: Advise needed: A/V Receivers

That's fair enough, but Andehh said a couple of times he wasn't keen on the Onkyo. Everyone kept recommending it anway! He then said he'd sacrifice a bit of performance for looks, and that he liked the Denon and Yamaha, but people again recommended the Onkyo.

I just feel that if he doesn't want the Onk, it'd be more helpful if people gave him alternatives

And I'd have to disagree that everything is surpassed after a couple of months. Maybe in PC equipment, but not in hi-fi/AV. With us being fairly new into the HD audio side of things, an amp bought now could last several years.

As a lot of the big players don't even have their HD products out, I feel it's worth waiting 'til they all release, then the OP will have a bigger choice, in a more competitive market.

Onkyo have had a while at the top, and I believe that it'll probably be the new Sony stuff that takes their crown. Probably based on a nice review in What Hi-Fi

I disagree here, Onkyo has support for all HD audio formats NOW. Reason were telling him to get this product is because it's the better product, not because of a bias. I would really like to see a sony product beat an Onkyo in terms of sound quality and features. He's on a limited budget so it's all about bang for buck, I would even buy the Onkyo 505 over a lot of products

    Re: Advise needed: A/V Receivers

the reason people wax lyrical about onkyo is that the 605 was a revolution in its class. NOBODY had anything that came close. it was the most affordable "full hd" amp on the market by a mile, full hdmi 1.3 support, 7.1 audio, etc. all the top-end features, for a midrange price

things have moved on a little in the last year, but having the best amp on the market bar none for a good few months has earnt onkyo a LOT of goodwill
