I actually have a couple of 'em in my living room, for when I have a host of guests all turn up at the same time, and I run out of 'proper' seating arrangements

They don't look like they'd be very comfortable, but in fact they are... and surprisingly so

trouble is i'm not very good at putting my thoughts down into written form.. but i'll give it a go..

the furthest lever at the back right, pull it up to make the back auto-lean when you lean.. push it down to lock it in position..
theres a large plastic screwy knob under the seat that adjusts the angle your bum and thighs are at..
the large bar at the front under the seat adjusts how far the seat moves forward and backward..
the arms go individually higher and lower too..

    anyway.. the comfort factor..

after around 6 years sat on it, I have no complaints for general sat on it for 8 hours at a time usage, other than the leather wearing out under my keyboard arm elbow. for lying back watching movie usage it is absolutely useless, the head support doesnt support and the large gaps between arms/back/seat bit you find your body parts sliding through them.. and you need a foot rest to loung backwards anyhow..

    verdict:

    top notch work chair..
    crap at lounging around chair..

would i buy another one - nope. it needs more support in various locations, that lazyboy looks better for that..
Quick question, are you quite skinny?

Im in good shape but being half-black i do have an ass, and the almost complete lack of lumbar support on this chair is horrible for me. The backrest is useless, the seat is flat and unsupportive. My lower back can't touch the back.

It just seems like such a primitive shape compared to all other supportive operator's chairs.

Re: Does this look like an ergonomic/comfortable chair to you?

Sorry but the above chairs are fail.

A proper chair does not have a wooden back/seat. This ruins the foam which is usually also cheaper and the chair goes very flat in couple of years. blue cloth also means it is cheap and nasty.

Proper chairs have springs, much better foam cusioning and should have a nice covering of either leather, or decent fabric WHICH IS NOT BLUE (the standard cheap office chair colour).

There is a lot to learn....

HEADRESTS should always be present. They should be comfortable and USEABLE. If I am sitting for 5-10+ hours my neck will get tired and this then becomes the 3rd most part of the chair.

The second most important part is decent lower back support. It should firmly fit the entire back accross all positions of the adjustable backrest.
The backrest SHOULD NEVER adjust by the pressure you excert on it. This will tire your back.

The most important part which is lacking from most office chairs is side support. It keeps you sitting striaght and keeps your lower back in the chair.

Lastly it should be designed to last 20 years.

Armrests are also mostly useless. They should be fully adjustable and removeable if present. I dont like them since my desk is set up properly to support my arms, which works far better.

It should be said that the only industrys where chairs are built to this quality are sofas - bit too big for the office maybe? or cars.
the best chairs imo are from big executive cruisers ... bimmers/mercs are an untested example though I think saabs are the most comfortable.

A new drivers chair costs maybe £200? dont now myself since I got mine from the breakers for £30 in perfect condidtion.

All you need is something to raise it up a few inches + wheels if you want them. Blocks of wood work well for me... but everyone knows somone capable of doing that for a few beers. Its really not a good excuse if you really care about the quality of your seating.

There is a brand of luxury office chairs that are awesome. They self adjust in every way as you sit down on them. the only thing is the headrest, cant remember if they have one but if so it was noticably useless. My boss has one of these that was given to him for a 1 week demo but the person never came back to collect it... costs about £800 iirc...

It makes sense that a quality car seat would be good, as long as all the adjustments work and you could put it on a good swivel base. dont like chairs that cant swivel, the legs get bored
