    electric bill

i really cant work this out parents ahve got the electric bill thru last one was 600 + quid and we usually one before that was 230 quid. now this one they recon in 2 months we have use 650 quid worth of electric and 11000kWh wateva that is the only thing we can think of that has changed is our boiler but we only used£2.50 on gas so not liek that was running all the time. this is how our last 3 bill have gone

    230 ish (6month)
    650 sih (6month)
    670ish (2month)

the second 6 month bill has 300 quid in gas charges fair enough it was winter we had the heatin on alot.. but basically from what ive worked out on the bill in the past 2 months we have used 3 - 4 times as much electricity... so that 3 - 4 x as much in a 3rd of the time is that even possible... all we ahve on of a night is 2 x freezer 2 x fridges mayba couple of tvs on standby. what confuses me slightly more is we have used during hte day about 300 units compared to 11k at night

anyone got any ideas called them up and thye are guna send out a person to check it but was wodnering if anyone knew where to go after that if there is a problem

Have you looked at your meter? check it to the one they think is an estimation and see how they compare.

You may have been paying under the odds, so see when your reading was last done

maybe your next door neighbour has tapped into your connection and is now running a folding farm?

and it might be worth checking your meter and seeing if they match up with the bill
edit: pretty much what finlay said

    Re: electric bill

There are many people who have this problem, and I was one of them
an electric and gas company said I used xx amount but I know I didnt and compared the meter within the months and there was no way my house could of used xx amount within those months
so i told them and they said it was their fault and the bill was changed

    Re: electric bill

npower helpfully 'estimated' my gas usage for one quarter last year and got it wrong by 600%. To be fair they responded relatively quickly when I told them it was so wrong. They took my word on the actual reading, was quite surprised they didn't send someone to check.

It doesn't matter too much if you lied anyway - it would have just caught up with you on your next reading

If you move / leave the house, they do a final reading in person usually, so its hard to get out of

Also check what stuff you have on standby which isn't off at the wall. I now turn stuff off at the wall when not using it.

they changed our meter and the company never updated the records, so about 4000 units were added to take it from 6000 back to zero on the new meter, there idiots.

    Re: electric bill

You could try one of those energy monitor things that you plug between the socket and appliance. It'll show you how many watts that particular device is using.

Try switching off most of your devices and have a look at the meter. You should be seeing minimal power usage.

    Re: electric bill

i switched from npower although having said that my wife would have me switching every 2 months if she had her way!
I did discover one thing - our fridge freezer doesn't half draw a lot of power. I wish I could find a good consumer review suite just for fridge freezers!

Don't all the new appliances these days have an energy efficiency rating?

    Re: electric bill

Yup, look for a A/A+ or in some rare cases A++ (although these are to be taken with a pinch of salt - as I understand it, these move around)
