I am not shocked or even surprised. It wouldn't be nice if they didn't resort to such misleading practice, but the Olympic is as much about sport as it is about politics and PR these days.
So I am willing to accept some embellishments. You know, a bit of CG here and there, some camera work - it's really no worse than what we are used to see on TV and in magazines. In fact, I wouldn't mind lip-syncing too much if the original voice recorded was from the little girl they've shown. I can understand that they are worried that a 9 years old might mess up in front of the world. But to 'manufacture' a 'perfect girl' who does not exist using two is what I'd consider fraudulent. And a serious insult the girls (they are basically saying that one doesn't sing well enough and the other doesn't look good enough). And a shot in their foot. They've damaged their 'national pride/interest' they tried to protect so hard with this stunt.
What was wrong with having the original singer there? She looks like a honest, 9 years old girl. It's not even like she looks unusual/offensive in any way.
As Stewart said, par for the course.
Of course, it's probably also taught the Chinese government a valuable lesson. Or two, in fact.
One, with that degree of media coverage, it's hard to keep this kind of thing secret for long. And Two, when it does come out, you don't half end up looking like pillocks.
I don't care about the fireworks but the cover up of the singing girl is shocking
Damn, don't they have editors?impossible to capture all 29 footprints from the air.

difficulty of placing the television helicopter at the right angle to see all 28 footsteps in a row.
What the big deal here? Yes its wrong, but we jump up and shout 'bad communist china' to make ourselves look superior and feel better. Someone mimed, shock horror! Typical western hypocrisy, we do this kind of thing all the time. They probably learnt this from our shallow culture anyway. Atleast they are just doing it out of pride.
Yes, it's sad and wrong. But the way we and our media react makes me laugh. It's a outrage shouts the daily mail etc - The next page in the paper will probably be about big brother, some girl band that mimes all the time and an advert with a skinny model. But it's those evil communists that are shocking eh.
And i dont think they are stupid enough to have thought they would get away with it, they just dont see its such a big deal.
God we need to get over ourselves. Are we really any better than them?
In case that did not come across, the fireworks thing doesn't bother me. I put it in the same category as 'embellishments' - not too unlike photo-editing models etc. I am not a big fan of lip-sync but at least it is normally done by the same artist (unless for comedic purpose). And last time I checked, it is still consider outrageous by the media anyway. Normally the artists take the flak, but it's the Chinese authorities who put her there.
And let's for a second assume that the UK is no better than China. Shouldn't they use this opportunity to show that they are beyond the 'Western shallowness'? Stay true to themselves? I find the whole idea that that they learned 'shallowness' from Western culture absurd to be honest.
To the credit of the Chinese populace though, at least some recognise that maybe, just maybe it was not the brightest idea (amidst the government's attempt to clamp down on the criticism). They really didn't need two girls to impress the world. If there is one thing that is also prevalent in many Western societies, for better or worse, it's political correctness. I just don't see any media or individual comment how the 9 years old doesn't have perfect teeth (and anyone pointing out how the 9 years old wasn't 'hot' would probably get flamed to ashes). It's ironic actually, because of that stunt the media now has to point out on the differences between the two girls both in appearances and (implied) singing abilities.
I don't know if this will work in a quote, but I didn't realise Page Rank had anything to do with itbut the Olympic is as much about sport as it is about politics and PR these days.

Lol, I spotted that, but couldn't be bothered to edit it ;P
Couldn't agree more with this thread, a real disappointment. Just seems China is taking the cheap & easy routes.
It's going to be hard to prove one way or another, but it would be really, really low if this story turns out true.
got to feel sorry for the little lass who really sang, she's always going to have this follow her thru her life, because she was'nt perfect !
