Im going to be attempting a 10mile walk soon, and if all goes well i'm gonna try and do i regularly
But dont really know what to go for footwear-wise, all the shoes and boots at Millets etc look stiff and overkill
what shoes would you wear?

First of all I think I'd use someone elses feet

Merrells
I find them to be the best trainers ever.
Depends on the terrain.
If we are talking normal roads, well 10 miles is not a long way - i would ware something comfortable that i already own, such as a pair of trainers (as they will be broken in already).
If it was every week, come rain or shine, or some gentle off road/country walking, then i would recommend Merrell Chameleons every time. I have been using them for years, they are hard to beat IMO.
If you are talking about proper hiking up hills/mountains, mud and rocky uneven routes, then you need to get down Millet and get fitted for some decent boots. Can't stress how important proper footwear is (although my Merrel Chameleons have taken me up the likes of snowdon in summer conditions many times). For boots I recommend and have veen happy with Merrel, North Face, Scarpa and Berghous. Cheap boots are a false economy.
these
in White of course.

It reminds me of the old saying.
Before you criticise someone, walk a mile in their shoes.
That way you're a mile away and they have no shoes on.

skate shoes (lots of extra padding if you go for ones with STi foam surrounds) and very comfy for long walks down normal roads, when i'm at college i walk 2.1 miles to town 4 times a week or so (not including the walking back on some of the days) and no feet ache or anything
or for boots element II's are the best i have ever had
edit: but they are steelies so you might not need them... http://www.shoe-shop.com/invt/6h2500...fety_elementii

I wouldn't use shoes at all, get yourself a good pair of boots that provide good ankle support and are comfartable. Not too good on names, but I believe Magnum do very good boots, perhaps you should look at them? That's the brand we were always recommended as cadets doing expedittions ranging from 15-100 miles
I used to go hiking quite a lot and went through many different pairs of hiking boots.
The one thing I learnt was that the different between 20 quid boots and boots like Demon and daisy roots is immense. The only hike I ever did in the 20 quid boots and my feet where wrecked covered in blisters. The demon boots I had which cost about 80 quid I never got one blister and didnt feel any pain
Shoes are something you have to try on imo, something that fits one person may not suit someone else at all.
That said... I love my Brashers, sort of a cross between a boot and a trainer in terms of comfort, goretex lined and very hard wearing.
I spent 5 days wandering around Prague in mine must have done at least 15+ miles daily and in complete comfort.
Cost me £70 from an ebay shop brand new....after I tried them on in a shop of course. Bargain!

If its a bit of a rough area.
Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly, because you tread on my dreams.
Depends. High heels? Lol
This sort of thing varies greatly between people so the best thing you can do is go and try on as many possible pairs as you can.
I've done training for and walked the Nijmegen Vierdaagse in the same pair of £30 Asics running shoes for a couple of years (must be coming up for about 800 miles on them). Never had a problem. Your milage may, in fact probably will, vary; but if you feel totally comfortable with a pair then a cheap price tag doesn't necessarily mean they won't be fine.
If you will be walking in all weathers then waterproof shoes would definitely be a good idea. Nothing quite makes blisters inevitable like wet socks...
What sort of terrain are you planning on walking on?
