Car kit vs cheap headset (mobile phones)

Right... Well I know that the law has changed and I know that my wife does a lot of driving (2-3 hours a day) and *cough* *cough* being female *cough* *cough* also does a lot of talking on the phone. Now she's not daft and doesn't do anything dangerous (in fact she tries to not use the phone) but I suspect that sooner or later she'll get nabbed for it so:

What's the legal requirement? Just that you don't use your hands for the phone? Can you press buttons as long as you aren't holding the phone?

And - assuming a simple holder and headset would be legal - would you recommend just that or that we splash out and get a proper car kit? (Which as I understand it is a external speaker and microphone so that apart from some way of dialing / answering the phone it's pretty easy)

the law says you cannot be holding the phone when driving, or using the buttons i think. best idea is to get a proper car kit, or just pull over to take a call when driving. its a lot more sensible, and could be life-saving in the long run.
    peace.

if war is the answer, then we are asking the wrong question

Just reading up now actually... Couldn't find anything last time I looked (just after new year) but the RAC has a page of advice now:

    As does the AA:

on newer phones (i.e. bluetooth ones, barring non-series60 nokias) you can just keep the phone in a handbag & use a bluetooth heaset - they're surprisingly unobtrusive.

Yeah - that would def. be the best way to go. On a new contract at the mo so no upgrades for a few more months. May just get a holder and a boom headset for now then (wired unfortunately). The phone holders... Do they just glue to the dash or do you have to drill holes and screw them on?

Totally clueless on this one obviously!
