I will start a forum on a new website, and I am collecting info on form software. I am very impressed by HEXUS forum, so I wondered if anyone knows what software HEXUS uses for its forums?

a highly customised version of: vBulletin® Version 3.7.4
(bottom left of the forum )
Ah, now I saw it (bottom right on this page). For the double information, taktak, I say "tack" ("thanks" in Swedish :-)

the forum makers have a mod sight, www.vbulletin.org
most of the stuff you see here can be downloaded from there, although you need a valid licence to download.
Great, GoNz0.

vbulletin is commercial software

There are open source alternatives out there. A popular one is phpBB - http://www.phpbb.com/
I've read a lot of stuff the last horu or so, and phpBB has jumped towards the top of the list. I am sure it is not too easy to work with for a beginner, but i also read that it is quite difficult to move data between forum software, so one better start with what one thinks one will stay with.

PHPBB is pretty popular, as is e107 and SMF. All have pretty good open communities for support.
you can start with phpbb, and if you want to make the jump to vbulletin you can use there impex import tool to convert the database.
I read that there were some problems with SMF:
"SMF is another open source forum software which had eveloved from YaBB. I had the opportunity to use it last year and found it having most of the features that I want (including attachments and sub forums out of the box). Mods can be installed easily and be reverted back to a certain stage if you decided that you won’t use it anymore.
The bad thing about it is that most mods are written for the default theme so if you’re using a custom theme, good luck as you will need to look through the code and do some manual tweaking to get a mod working in your custom theme. I also hate the fact that the themes are still using Smartly-like template tags which can be a show-stopper for those who came from a pure (x)html/css background.
Besides, some mods don’t even play nice with each other, and once they are installed side by side, it can be too late for you to disable the mod and revert back to a previous state before the mod was installed. This was really what frustrated me. If I had to do it again, my advice would be to use everything out of the box and just let the forum grow before doing anything fancy."

Any comments?

ok then, but a lot of alternatives with similar functions are on there if you look hard enough
Oh, there's a LOT out there, yeah. One of the reasons I prefer VB to most (read that as "all") of the alternatives is that there's a vast and vibrant developer community. My point was to not take for granted that everything here is generic .... or even that members can see all of the tweaks.
hell no, but i agree its got a fantastic customer based mod section, and i think its the best supported out there, i personally run 2, one for my game clan and one for the games host i work for.
