Is that true? Is that really, really, god's* honest truth? That's exactly how it happened? He had to take them down because it was offensive to Islam, or was it because he'd breached some (probably paranoid) H&S rule, and the councillor happened to be muslim?

If it is because a muslim bloke was offended by it, you'll find that's by far the exception rather than the rule.

As far as I know, they weren't breaking any H+S rules - just the councillor didn't like them. I didn't speak to the guy directly so bits might have been changed. But either way : do people have nothing better to do??

Re: Do people have nothing better to do?

Did the guy have home made models of popular children's characters? Did he have permission by the copyright holders to do this?

There is a guy here in Aberdeen that puts on a huge light display in his front garden. This was a problem for him a few years back if I remember right. He's got round it now though, and I think is now in direct contact with the copyright holders he decides to use. He takes a collection for the children's hospital in the next street too.

Chasing copyright like this might seem petty and small minded, but the holders have to do this. If they are not seen to be actively protecting their copyright or trademark, they can loose it. So even when they don't want to take legal action against someone, they are obliged to go that route and then negotiate from there.*

*this might be a little off, but that's the general idea. I'm not a lawyer..... or Saracen.

Re: Do people have nothing better to do?

The BBC are probably in breach of the trades description act if their character is advertised on TV as brown and is sold in a shade that isn't remotely close. I don't think this is PC gone mad. People just aren't getting what they expect and it' more likely to be a child complaining to mum and dad that Upsy Daisy "isn't like wot it is on da telly".

As for the councillor - if that is true then the person with the lights should simply have stood his grounds and threatened to sue for racial and religious discrimination. Use the crappy laws against those who would use them against you.

You obviously never saw the recent Screenwipe special on kids TV.

The only thing I find worrying about Upsy Daisy is the vaguely sexual overtones exhibited by the character - but then maybe that's just the way my sicko mind works.

I and my little boy prerfer Little Princess anyway - funniest thing on TV.

Why? The media would have had a field day with it! Not a single right-minded person would object to Christmas decorations unless there was something particularly offensive or dangerous about them (such as electrical wires dangling all over the place or a depiction of The Prophet Muhammed being violated by a snowman's carrot).

Local papers absolutely love that sort of thing, he would have gained loads of respect from everyone and the councillor would have been exposed as being a complete nutcase. If people don't want to be bullied around by genuinely over-excessive rules, they need to fight back, not just roll over and take it, otherwise they'll get bossed around for the rest of their lives.

I don't know where you're from, but most city councils are actually paranoid about stopping genuine British traditions because they know there will be an insanely large backlash.
