I think the fact that he was an experienced glider pilot probably counted a lot, he would have had a lot more "feel" for what was needed.

Whats interesting is how its only lost one engine, considering that landing on water at high speed is like slapping down onto concrete.
Anyhow, if its not been posted before here is a bbc news video of the aircraft just after landing on the Hudson river with passengers evacuating.
