Plane (crash) lands on the Hudson River

Airbus crashes in New York river

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7832191.stm

Looks like a bit of nice flying the the pilots.

Just as a side: I never thought I'd see a ditched plane floating on water (other than one designed for it, with ski or whatever)

Re: Plane (crash) lands on the Hudson River

If they keep their wings and are upright, then it should float for a little while, especially if there's enough time to jetison the fuel. By the sounds of it, it had just taken off, so was full of fuel, which meant the pilot probably didn't have enough time to jettison enough fuel. Would also explain why it wasn't able to cope with just one engine.

Re: Plane (crash) lands on the Hudson River

    It was bird strike.

Bit of a design flaw that.

Plane is Ok so long as it doesn't hit a bird.

    Bird lives in the sky.

    Where the plane going?

    Erm... it's not important.

    Where is it going?

    Sky.

Another fine mess you've got me in to!

Re: Plane (crash) lands on the Hudson River

Always reminds me of and Eddie Izzard sketch...

    Bird Strike ?
    What ?
The birds are flying along see a plane and think "let's attack ! Go for the engines guys! "

Surely it's more like Plane Strike !
The flock of birds innocently flying along when along comes the plane and ploughs into them..

But more seriously, excellent flying by the ex-fighter pilot when having a very rare event (possibly a double bird-strike affecting both engines), thinking quick saved the lives of >100 passengers.

Apparently (on the radio this morning) the pilot refused to leave the plane until he'd been back in for a second time to make sure no-one was left inside.

That plane 'should' have been able to stay in the air after losing one engine, even just after take-off. They're designed to factor that kind of thing in, or at least, that's what I was tought at uni. Two is just really bad luck!

Still very good work by the pilot though, especially for going back to check for passangers.

Yes, and each engine can survive being hit by a 4lb bird and still function (amazing really). But I'd guess that canada geese or whatever hit these engines were probably a bigger.

I think it was a flock of smaller birds which it says can cause more problems.

I can only assume that the birds took out both engines and i would say the pilot was pretty good to land on the water and for everyone to escape unharmed.

This is what can happen to planes when they land on water http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=-s9v9fW-58I

Re: Plane (crash) lands on the Hudson River

With a name like "Chesley B 'Sully' Sullenberger III" you have to do something great. That was the name of the pilot

    Incredible flying skills however.

Re: Plane (crash) lands on the Hudson River

My dad used to work at Heathrow airport as a copper and they used to get upto all sorts on the outskirts of the airport. One of his mates had a poop gun, which is basically a blunderbuss type gun which sits on the poop deck that you fill full of any old crap and fire it at the masts and rigging of other ships. One day this bloke decided that he was going to fire it so set up some bales of hay filled the poop gun with shot and then proceeded to throw seed and breadcrumbs over an area 300 yards in front of the gun. He waited and waited until there were thousands of birds and then fired this thing off. Absolute carnage apparently, it blew him back into the load of hay bales, but it did reduce the airports need to scare birds for a bit.

The gun was lost when this bloke took it on a fishing trip. Three coppers went fishing and had a bit too much to drink and accidentally fired the gun through the bottom of the boat which sank taking their gear and poop gun with it!

Anyway - hats off to that pilot because water landing don't usually end well.

Re: Plane (crash) lands on the Hudson River

Well, if you can't make it back to an airport (which he might possibly have done), then the river really is the only other place available in NY. Even if the landing doesn't end well, at least you aren't endangering a lot of other people (I suppose there's people sailing on the river, but a small amount compared to the city). During the Queen's Birthday fly-past a couple of years ago, the Spitfires/Hurricanes that took part had to accept that for about 5 minutes of the flight, if the engine failed, they would have to ditch into the Thames. Single engined aircraft aren't generally allowed over London airspace for that reason.
