Microsoft is accused by EU again

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7834792.stm

This is just absolutely rediculous. They're now claiming that MS is harming consumer choice by putting a web-browser into Windows.

I'm sorry but how does one get a browser if there isn't one on the system? Use wget? No thanks. Not many people know how to use wget, and you still need some way to get wget also...

Exactly, unless you have another computer or know a bit about computers, you wouldn't be able to get online easily. IE can be uninstalled, anyway - what's the big problem?

Ah but SiM, the other post is in a more selective area... GD is more mainstream, and a fair few people (like myself) wouldn't have come across this if it weren't here too.

As for the story - What the hell does the EU have to do with MS? MS is based in America, and last time I checked, America wasn't in Europe.

But they have bases in Europe (guess) and sell their wares here so the EU can fine them. Meh if I was Microsoft I'd pack up shop and stay in USA, and stick two fingers at the EU.

So... this does not justify cross posting or re-posting... If you were interested in this topic area you would browse the correct sub-forum too. The "fair few people" can miss this and it's no big deal. There are some people who only read the car forum, so shall we post this there too?

No. But that news article does not belong in that forum. Why? Because that's under "HEXUS.help - buying advice & technical queries". So you're wrong about which forum it belongs in.

    "HEXUS.help - buying advice & technical queries"
The label there incorrectly describes those sub-forums - the forums there are not just for help, also for general chat about the topic areas:
    Networking and Broadband
    Operating systems & applications
    HEXUS.hardware

In those forums you will see a lot of post not asking for help. There is a lot of general chat about those topic areas and epeen waving threads without asking for help.

    Help usually goes here:
    Help - technical & advisory

Regardless, it doesn't justify a repost - you can ask a moderator to move the original thread if it upsets you that much!

Errr, there are loads of customers in the EU. They need EU approval to sell the product over here.

Re: Microsoft is accused by EU again

I posted it in OS and apps because it's about an OS and an app, so i felt it was in the right place - even though id' get more responses from GD.

Merge them if it bothers people that much?

If it's not by the same OP, and the second hadn't seen the first, I don't believe that to be a blatant repost. Besides, the so-called correct forum is "Operating Systems and Applications" - does that mean that MOST threads are in the wrong place? I'm sure you could move a great of of threads containing news links to somewhere else on the Hexus forums, where they would be more 'correctly' placed.

Re: Microsoft is accused by EU again

Not sure what you mean JK. It is not a big deal really. The mods should clarify where this belongs, because I see why DataMatrix got confused if he doesn't visit the technical forums frequently. The technical forums are labelled "HEXUS.help - buying advice & technical queries", but a large chunk of the posts there are not buying advice or technical queries

Re: Microsoft is accused by EU again

I looked at this when it was first posted, having been in the other thread.

My view .... there's no absolute right or wrong.

Sometimes a thread is plainly a repost, or in the wrong place. If so, I'll move it or reference the original and lock the duple. But sometimes, it's arguable it can constructively be in more than one place. For instance, if you post the right topic in GD and Question Time, you'll get different people responding, often in different ways, and end up with a different discussion.

So the issue is, if I close or move it, does it help or hinder. Frankly, this was was a close call, but I can't see that it hurts having it in both and personally, I wasn't bothered enough to move it. Of course, some other mod might see it different. But as far as I'm concerned, that's why we still have both - it seemed reasonable to leave them both.

But certainly, as a general rule, I'd move obviously inappropriate stuff to the right forum and close dupes. But like most rules, they're proved by the exceptions.
