Why do films at the end credits still date the year they were made in Roman Numerals? Even current ones? Seems a bit ... well out dated.

I guess tradition maybe?
Someone told me it's so you can't immediately figure out when something was made, or the age of the material - in other words being awkward. Don't know how true this is, but I just googled it and some people say it, and some just say it just looks cool (?)...
