    Word page numbering help

    This is REALLY annoying me!!!!!!!!!!!

    For my dissertation I have:

    TITLE PAGE
    TITLE PAGE
    ABSTRACT
    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
    CONTENTS
    INTRODUCTION..etc.

For the 2 title pages there should be no page numbers.
The abstract, acknowledgements and contents must have roman numerals.
The rest of the report starting with intro must have normal numbering.

How can I make word do this?? I read that you use section breaks, so I made a section break after the 2 title pages. Then after the contents, so 2 titles are in section 1, next 3 pages are in section 2, the rest starting with intro is in section 3.

Then I tried to put the page numbers. Start by putting the roman numerals on the abstract page, and it puts a 0 on the first title page, but no roman numerals on any other pages!

Then I read about pressing ctrl-f9 to get {PAGE \*roman} then right clicking it and doing "update field". That either gives me the result that the roman numerals start on the Acknowledgements page (with nothing on the Abstract) or puts a "i" on the abstract and nothing on any other page. If I try and do the same on the acknowledgement page, fine, it does a "ii"...but it also puts a "i" on the 2nd title page!!!!!!!!!!

I really have no clue wtf is wrong or how to do this so any help is much appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Chris.

You want to put section breaks in at the end of each one, then at the begin of each section, do an insert.. page numbers. Click format and choose the relavent style, together with the number you want to start at.

    Bobs your uncle.

You will have to do view header/footer and manually remove them from the front page though.

...or so you would think. It's currently set up like this:

    title________________ section 1
    title________________ section 1

    ---------------------- break

    abstract____________ section 2
    acknowledgements___ section 2
    contents____________ section 2

    ----------------------break

    intro_______________ section 3
    etc________________section 3

Ok, so now I go onto the footer of the abstract (first page of section 2) and do insert page numbers. It puts the second title page as "i", abstract as "ii" etc...WHY!

*edit* actually it makes first title page "0", second title page as "1" then abstract as "ii" etc

You havent chosen to start from 1 in the format box wold be my guess, youll need to do that at the beginning of each section

But that doesn't explain why putting numbers on section 2 puts them on section 1 as well. I don't want any on section 1, yet I can't have them on section 2 without having them on section 1 as well. I mean I now have everything running ok except I have 0 1 on the title pages (or 1 2 if I format it to start at 1)

I can't remember what the exact wording is and i'm using Word 2007 and it is quite different.

Even though the pages are split into sections, you have to un-link the heards and footers. There is a button on the header/footer toolbar for this.

TBH i think thats just word being incompetent, and i have no idea how to get them off. Thats just one of the reasons i did my dissertation using LaTeX. However, as i assume it needs to be in tommorow, and obviously, notwithstanding someone else telling you how to do it, id just go for the old white filled rectangle over the top trick.

Nah it's not in tomorrow, and for some reason it's suddenly worked!!! I deleted the numbers off the first 2 pages and instead of deleting numbers from all pages, it just worked 8-) Cheers anyway though
