    Questions for Akasa

Hi everyone, at the last minute we've managed to get Adrian Young from Akasa to talk to me on TV tomorrow. We'll be talking about cases and so on but also trying to expand the conversation to the technology industry in general and whatever other tangents present themselves, including, of course, the pizza question.

So please post any questions you'd like chucked at Adrian and, as ever, I'll try to ask them.

When are you going to make an affordable media centre case in the price range of current standard atx/mATX (as in £30-60) ?

    Please tell him that:

The Eclipse is a masterpiece, a classic with loads of life in it yet, and I will still consider it for most new builds.

and that things like the 960E are great products

BUT the trend for fans that have no casing around them, making them non-replaceable is a flawed plan. Things like this:

Now, Akasa haven;t slipped too far into that habit yet, but don't go any further. Use standard, shrouded fans, because we've all got loads of them, and tend to swap and change them from the default provided fan, until the perfect partner is found FOR THAT PARTICULAR PC.

Because you cant turn the fan around, to suck air from the cooler, unless it IS a normal fan design.

Why would I want to do that? Because in TWO of the Small Form Factors that I've built, the PSU is right above the heatsink, and it draws air through to the outside... and having a fan drawing air down onto the cpu was just silly, with two fans fighting, causing a vacuum and making a right din, and overheating the cpu.

    Re: Questions for Akasa

    oh.. nearly forgot...

The Zen case, while great value.. well.. the plastic CD draw bits just didn't fit properly.

It took bleedin' ages to get the CD drive fitted, to the nearest micron of positioning, so that the draw opened when pushed, if at all.

If need be, raise the price by a quid and sort the plastic castings...

    Re: Questions for Akasa

Why don't they include a temperature controlled fan with the Akasa Vortexx Neo graphics card cooler??

It would nice if it can run at a slower speed at idle and ramp up when hotter. Having the fan at constant speed is not good at idle when it makes it unnecessarily noisy. The slower fan setting is better noise wise but is useless when a card is at load as it then heats up too much!!

Even a PWM fan would be an improvement. Also it would be nice if they could extend the rear flange a bit as it will help expel hot air a bit more efficiently out of the case.

    Re: Questions for Akasa

Any plans to bring out cases with bottom mounted PSU's?
(I'd love to see a version on the Zen and infinti with bottom mounted PSUs)

Zen with removeable hard drive cage?

What are the actual differences between the Zen original, version 2 and version 4 ? (and version 3 if there was one)

Bit further on Finlay's point, a decent HTPC chassis with their (frankly excellent) paxmate acoustic deadening pre installed. Would be top on the list of my HTPC components, bit like the Antec NSK series
