Night work- How do you stay awake?

Are there any other Hexus members who like myself do a lot of night work (i.e working from midnight until 8am or midday) How do you stay awake?? Do you use caffeine tablets, red bull or some other method.

Reason i'm asking is to find a better way that works for me. Currently I either try and sleep before a night shift, or drink plenty of red bull. However, I never seem to feel awake having to keep making sure i'm awake. So any advice on some things to try???

    Sleep.

Watch movies, keep your mind active. Go to bed when you get home and sleep until you wake up, don't set your alarm.

I agree with TeePee on the no alarm front - I find I stay awake longer when I wake naturally, with no external help.

Depending on what exactly you do, try and do something interesting when you can.

Re: Night work- How do you stay awake?

I would expect that sleeping before a night shift would work. I am very much a night person, and that's what I do (no, I didn't just wake up, I took a nap between 9pm to 12am just so that I can spend the night rehearsing a speech due in a few hours).

Re: Night work- How do you stay awake?

I do try an sleep before a night shift, but find i'm still tired. When I get home at 8.15 am i will not set an alarm (apart from one at about 9.30 pm just in case lol) I find that I can't watch any films really after 4am. As my job at the moment just requires me to watch a site I have a lot of spare time, which for this shift has been taken up with revision. Sadly that lasted 2 hours. Is there anything I can get from a pharmacy or online (no illegal pills thx) I have tried the caffeine pills but my stomach does not like them at all. Cheers for the input will see if it works for me.

Try physical exercise, a mate of mine who had to do the out of hours support at my old place used to go to the gym for 30 mins in his 'lunch' break.

Re: Night work- How do you stay awake?

I never really needed to do anything special to stay awake for night shifts, I even slept less than usual when doing them (4hours compared to a usual 8)

Re: Night work- How do you stay awake?

When I do nightshift, I don't do anything special. I'll probably drink a bit more coffee than normal, but nothing excessive (it's all rubish cheap instant coffee offshore anyway) and most of that is due to having a bot more time on my hands.

Re: Night work- How do you stay awake?

Make sure the room you sleep in is quiet and really dark - you'll sleep much better if it's properly blacked out. Similarly, you'll find it easier to stay awake if the place you're working in is brightly lit.
Using caffeine / Red Bull etc may keep you awake for work but can also stop you sleeping properly afterwards.

Take a flick through some of clunks collections of internets, you will never be able to even close your eyes again, let alone sleep.

Re: Night work- How do you stay awake?

I used to do 7pm-7am night shifts.

Try and change your routine so you wake up at 5:30pm/6:00pm (like you would in the morning) get up get ready and go to work, then when you get back from work have a few hours to yourself, have a main meal, then go back to bed. A few days of this got me into a routine which made the long hours pass much quicker.

Coffee/Cafiene stuff helps, but when it gets to 3/4am NO amount of the stuff keeps you going.

Re: Night work- How do you stay awake?

The first couple of times when you try and sleep in as such it doesnt work and you will be up by 2/3 no matter how tired you are.

A few days of reversing the routine around and you should start staying asleep until your alarm goes.

Not sure what you do, but at 4am I had a wander round the office then if it was ok outside take a quick wander round the place.
