Video not available in your country

Has anyone noticed the 'video not available in your country' bar when browsing Youtube? It's getting really annoying now, even videos I watched a week or two ago are not viewable. It's even more annoying when you consider the video is actually from the UK. I know they are saying about copyright and all that but when the video is uploaded by the song artist, what's wrong with that?

Re: Video not available in your country

Yeah I have noticed it. Apprently this is to do with YouTube cracking down on those of us from the UK watching certain video's on YouTube such as music videos.

Really annoying especially when I watched a video last week then went to show it someone and it was gone.

Re: Video not available in your country

It's to do with their disagreement with PRS (Performing Rights Society). Basically, PRS collects royalties for every song played on radio, TV, internet and so on, and then distributes them between labels, artists, and probably themselves =)

Youtube had a licensing agreement with them, but it came to an end recently. And Youtube did not accept the new hiked prices (they're saying a few times previous amount). So since they don't have a legal agreement about the music videos now, youtube decided to block them for UK viewers.

It's a bit harsh on youtube's account, but I'm with them on this one because I don't agree with how PRS does its business.

What made me laugh is that the PRS were upset with youtubes move to block the content. Muppets. Or should that read greedy muppets.

Re: Video not available in your country

    No, just the UK.

As a musician and music student, I think the PRS are being completely pathetic. Bands have YouTube videos on their websites; Publishers have their own YouTube channels to put up their artist's music, and because the PRS are demanding some stupidly huge figure, the fans can no longer enjoy their favourite artists music videos. Well done, you bunch of ignorant pigs.

Re: Video not available in your country

But surely the artists must own the music and should be able to upload it on youtube if they want?

Musicians get screwed by thier label, and screwed by pirates. One of the main downsides to being a pro musician.

They've been doing that for years, even before iplayer came along. Apparently, the BBC does not want us to watch the shows that we paid for anywhere other than Beeb itself.

The Beeb themselves don't want it (come on, you would want to control distribution of the programmes you made), but the Top Gear crew and production team encourage it. Andy Wilman (the producer of TG) is a member of FinalGear and frequently encourages the distribution of torrents of TG.
