    Re: What is there in....

    Another from York here...

Pretty much what Andy said, though unless I'm much mistaken the Snickelway Inn is shut now (credit crunch and all that). Brigantes is a nice Belgian style brasserie on Micklegate if you're into interesting beers. Food-wise Red Chilli (Szechuan) and Akbars (Pakistani) are pretty good, though the service at the former can be anywhere between outstanding and dire dependent on the staff you get looking after you. There's a whole bunch of places to eat on Swinegate and the surrounding area.

Cinema-wise there's the City Screen in the middle of town (off Coney Street, the main shopping street) which is pretty cool (especially the main screen) and shows some cool art-house stuff as well as the standard kinda things. There's a Vue out at Clifton Moor, but it's a pretty standard out of town multiplex.

The York Eye is gone now, though it may be back by the time you're talking about - there's talk of it being put over near the Castle Museum/Clifford's Tower though to be honest I was largely underwhelmed when I had a peek.

The Castle Museum is well worth the time if you're interested in history at all, Jorvik (the Viking Centre) is... ok, but I wouldn't get too worked up about it. If you get good weather a walk around the city walls is definitely worthwhile - take a camera if you have one as you can get some cracking shots as you wander around. The Yorkshire Museum in the Museum Gardens is pretty cool too (if you've no interest in history then it's probably not for you, but then if that's the case then York might not be the place for you.)

If you need info on anything in particular feel free to drop me a pm and I'll be happy to help if I can.

It was only licensed as a temporary attraction, though they may be putting another up at some point soon. Plus where it was located was less than ideal - in one direction you had some great views of the Minster and the river, in the other you had.... the area that's to be redeveloped as "York Central" where the old coachworks and stuff were.

like Clifford's tower is gonna be a better position though? what would you gain by putting it there?
if you want a view.. just go up to Clifford's tower, you get a decent enough view from there.

I'm not defending the idea of putting it at St George's Field either - it's going to have the same problem. I personally don't see how a place as small as York can justify something like it.

And yes - York's pretty small. You can walk across it comfortably (for the OP's information)

One thing that could be cool (again, dependent on weather and budget) is a hot air balloon trip - http://www.virginballoonflights.co.u...shire-york.asp - I'm seriously considering a trip for me and the missus, I think it'd be quite romantic.

Took Her Ladyship on one five or six years ago for her birthday, whilst rather cool not having done it before it has to be said that there's not a massive amount of great interest to be seen from the air over York. It's cool to float over your house and see the Minster from the air but it's nothing you can't see with Google or any aerial photography site.

If you get a morning flight you can pretty much leave the camera at home because all you get is haze, I would have preffered a nice evening flight for decent clear moody dusk shots and wotnot. There was no choice of flight time it was a case of once they said we were go for a flight on a given day they made the call if it was morning or evening depending on forecast.

Also, word of warning, I got it for her birthday in May and because of weather we had to wait two months before we could fly which kind of took the shine off it. We had to ring up every weekend to see what they felt about the forecast for a go-no-go.

    Re: What is there in....

If you're staying late(ish), I'd defiantly recommend THIS ghost walk. I've been a few times, and although the act never changes, it's very entertaining. It's easily worth the fiver in my opinion.

After that, find a quiet pub somewhere to spend the rest of your time. York is really bad for clubs, but it's not bad for pubs if you're not expecting places to be ultra modern .
