So, who's writing/has written theirs this year?
Thankfully I managed to dodge that bullet by doing a Politics module instead of a dissertation, however those that did write one (History dept. @ UEA) I believe have handed theirs all in
I handed mine in earlier this year (In Feb), I was doing a Media course and my paper was titled "Is Home Cinema Becoming the Cinema Experience".
It's all a distant memory to me now.
I do Interactive Media Design and handed in my dissertation yesterday - titled "Development of a Pattern Language for Concept Music Videos". Had my poster presentation yesterday as well, which went down pretty well - still have the viva to go.
I'm doing an Extended Project (It's part of the 14-19 diploma nominally, but I'm doing it as an addition to my A-levels) which constitutes a dissertation on a subject of your choosing. I've just handed in 13000 glorious words on the science and ethics of transplant surgery.
I handed mine in on Tuesday after getting 12 hours sleep in 4 days. So glad it's finally over! Mine was titled "Multi-'touch' Input via Visual Tracking". Basically I used hand tracking, hand pose recognition and gesture recognition to control a collage application I made. All with an off the shelf webcam
I'm in Y12, and you've really shot yourself in the foot doing it next year, as its main value to us medics is giving us something to talk about at interview; it doesn't count towards your offer remember, it's just a nice extra. Even so, it's really good fun, and it should give you an idea of where you want to head in medicine. Where are you thinking of applying to?
We have to go back to school after the exams and finish off the summer term and it is then that we do the extended project, so it's still done before interviews and whatnot
I'm still fairly undecided as to where to apply but I have a few thoughts. Imperial would be one (requires BMAT, though, which is generally a bit awkward as its one of the only unis which requires it), Southampton is another option and as for the other 2 places, nothing is set in stone yet. I'm primarily leaning towards London unis - I've heard good things about St George's and, a bit further affield, Cardiff is a possibility. I've decided that I'll put down Biomedical Sciences at Queen Mary University (London) as my 5th choice.
*sorry for going a spot off topic, all*
Working on my dissertation at the moment, hand in on the 22nd. Coding is done (there's always more I could add, but I'm stopping it here so I actually have time to write the report!), but I'm on about 200/15,000 words... This is going to be a long 2 and a bit weeks.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.
You need to start thinking about it now. I was working on it since mid-December, and it was still a push. Also, doing it then you've missed the deadline for entry this year, so you won't get the result until August 2010. And FWIW, my shortlist is Cambridge (Definite), Bristol (Almost definite), Birmingham (Probable), Nottingham (Probable), and Sheffield, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and a few others.
My school has decided not to do the extended project through an exam board so I won't actually get any qualifications for it, other than being able to mention it on my UCAS, hence timing isn't really an issue. I believe their justification was something to the effect of they didn't want the project to be limited by any exam board criteria.
