how many other countries have you live in?

Only Germany when i was a child (6 years in total). I've never spent any serious amount of time outside of europe, and thre are plenty of places i would hapily live, espesually for the share i was been offered!
Thing is this wouldn't take effect for another 12 months (non-compete with previous employees thing).

I think you really need to think more positively about your situation. The fact is you still have a job and are still attractive to potential employers. Perhaps you need to talk to somebody about your problems as it can make yourself feel better?? If everything else fails then look to get a new position with people who respect you more. This negative thinking will only feed into itself and at some point it will cause you serious problems.
TBH you are in a MUCH better situation than many people I know especially when you are only 24!!
Many of my friends are highly qualified, have plenty of experience in their areas and work their arses off and yet it does not mean with all this that they can even stay in their fields or have a well paying or even a long term job. To stay in their fields many of them have to do stints abroad too even if it means that they are separated from friends and family. Not all of them can afford a mortgage either. On top of all this not everyone has nice co-workers too as you always get the A-holes who want to cause issues.
This is life and you need to deal with it.

indeed, the problem is i'm not saying oh woe is me.
Its more a case of been powerless to help my friends who are all worse off than me, work giving me nothing to do, leaves me with even more time to reflect on this sort of stuff.
I just had a good chat with a close friend of mine who's off traveling and she has hit the nail on the head, i'm powerless to change this stuff i don't like, and all i can do is watch, with plenty of time to watch it just makes me progressively worse, the easyest way to stop it is just to get **** faced!
So i'm going to meet up with a friend of mine in a bit and we're going to do some street photogrophy, might see if we can't get up to archway bridge for when the light starts failing!

I know the feeling too about being powerless to help mates out too and the only thing I could do is offer any help I could muster to improve their situation or keep their spirits up. This is all you can do TBH as you are not the head cheese.
This is what I have done in the past when I was down!! Print out some of best shots too and it will give you a sense of satisfaction.
London is just great for photography as it has some really interesting buildings and cityscapes.
You could post some of the pictures on photo.net if you want to get some feedback!
Photography is a good antidote for when the blues hit.
Perhaps you also organise a big get together with some mates or even a BBQ as this can be fun for everyone involved. It does not need to be anything fancy either.
Couldn't have said it better myself...
Count yourself incredibly lucky that you have not been made redundant. The company I work for lost a contract which has left me and 5 others on my team with no jobs come the middle of June, and it's getting very close and so far I've only managed to get one interview for a new job. There's sod all around!
I wish I had £500 to waste on alcohol, at the moment I'm several thousand in debt, am about to lose my job and possibly the roof over my head if I'm not lucky.
If I were you, I would realise how lucky you are...
I would take it the instant they offered me it!
We have a manager who is determined to get rid of the "dead wood" (his words not mine!) so he is firing all the people who quitely get on with their jobs, and hiring a bunch of prima donnas (which i guess i fall into that catagory).

You say your a little bit OC and without having something to OC over, your finding other ways to fill the time/ void left with your "demotion".
You may not be in the...most suitable position at the moment, but your in a better position then most, you DO have a job and your ARE earning.
Why not think up your own project to work on? Something you want to do but have been putting off, or just generally something that may be a benefit to you or the company you work for? Atleast that way you will have something to keep your interested and active.
I get in a similar state - not exactly self destructive and certainly not in terms of going out boozing (not these days anyway - though there was a time when I settled down to watch the original star wars trilogy and started on a bottle of red wine before lunch time) but I do get very despondent.
The job I'm in has fairly frequent quiet periods in between projects and that combined with the fact that I work from home most of the time makes it very easy to get into a downward spiral and end up thinking nothing's worth the effort - that I'm stuck in a dead-end job with no real prospects or skills and that no-one appreciates the effort I put in when things are busy.
I have done and still do spend time on pet projects during the quieter times but find it very hard to stay motivated - particularly as my last pet project plugs a hole in the product that customers have raised as an issue but no-one's willing to take it on. To be honest the dev team had a recent-ish round of redundancies and I'd hoped that would give the remaining staff a much needed kick up the arse but they seem more inflexible and entrenched in their attitudes than ever. I know it's not nice to wish redundancy on anyone but in this case I say viva la revolution... Before anyone points it out I do realise that I'm suffering from a wounded ego to at least some extent here - and that I'm relatively lucky to be be relatively secure in a relatively well paid job.

People in general are funny. It makes me think. Who ever taught people to deal with their problems with drugs, and in your case alcohol? A total mystery to me. Imagine if you had never tried alcohol. When you get run down like this would you go out and try to get wasted?
I think it's the same everywhere mate. When things go crap for everyone and people are being crapped on they angry or upset. And most of the time they look at the person who is actually doing okay and say to themselves "You Bas*ard" And the person here is you. And make no mistake, If it is not you it will be someone else. So you obviously are good at your job.
It is not in your control. This is not real, everyday life. This is work. It's just the nature of how businessess run. It is just a job.
And when you finnish that job at the end of he day you can hang out with you friends. I'm certain that you didn't make your mates redundant. And I'm sure they do not believe YOU made them redundant?
And I bet most people on this forum are looking at this thread and thinking "You Bas*ard. Want to trade?" :

I know it's hard but don't feel like it's your personal responsibility if someone gets fired. If you had been fired instead and got another job then some poor applicant for that job (who maybe really needed it) would still be on the dole. The only difference this way is (presumably) the guy who got fired got redundancy money. There are X number of jobs out there and you can't get more people work just by moving yourself to another company.
And with regards the boredom, I agree with everyone else who said find a new hobby. I started skydiving this year and pretty much gave up drinking just to pay for it. Surfing, cookery, body building, learn a language, revamp all the wikipedia articles you know something about...there's got to be something out there you want to do.
Best thing in life is to realise that we're powerless to affect anything other than our own actions. You say you feel bad for your friends, then go and do something, even if it's a "hollow" gesture of stopping by with a pizza & letting them whinge. Definately stop analysing everything.
As for work, it's a ****ty position to be in, but at the end of the day it pays the bills.

This is bunny and friends. He is fed up waiting for everyone to help him out, and decided to help himself instead!
