    Question So, D-Day

I know if you watch the Hollywood versions we all know the yanks were entirely responsible. yeah, right US forces 73,000, Allied forces 83,000, but yes they ochestrated it. Anyhoo, my point is this, the annual D Day celebrations in France, Obama gets an invite, our Queen doesn't.

What's all that about? Have the Frenchies forgotten the part we played already & the Hollywood version generally accepted as fact?

By that rationale the French shouldn't be invited either, they barely played any part in the liberation of their own country at all!

And then marched into Paris as if they had done it all themselves. The only French army so to speak were the under ground resistance groups.

For some reason Brown is now going although if you look back in the news they said Brown would not be attending!!! I think Browns ears must have picked up on the fact that Obama will be there. And if you think its bad enough that the Queen is not going then you will also be surprised to hear about the French tv coverage..............................Mostly if not all French tv coverage will be from the American beaches. Now i'm not saying those beaches were any less important than the other four, but its a shame that respect can not be paid to all soldiers who fought, without some media coup taking place!!!

Nope because she is a head of state she must be invited!!! Sad really as a lot of the soldiers who are going were looking forward to marching past her (last time for many i would guess)

    Re: So, D-Day

It's been in the press today.
Not really surprising - gratitude has never been their strong point - look at De Gaulle's attitude to British entry into the Common Market, for one.
About the only reference Brit forces get in Hollywood WWII films is a kind of roll-of-the-eyes over some stupidity or implied lateness. Frankly, they can shove it.

To be fair, I'm not sure exactly where else you were expecting a French Army to sprout from. I completely agree about the self-righteousness of it all though.

When criticising the French regarding World War II, it's far easier to point at the fleet. On multiple occasions French naval vessels fired at the vessels from the Free French Fleet under de Gaulle, because they decided to stay under German command, which in my opinion is pretty unforgivable.

Well he's not representing Britain though, is he?
I suppose Brown or the Queen are good enough - neither are elected!

    Re: So, D-Day

Very strange - the queen should be there as she is the head of our armed forces (including the commonwealth forces). I hate to come over all daily mail (in fact I'm not that much of a monarchist / royalist) but assuming this really is as it's being presented I'd prefer our veterans - and politicians - to boycott the event on principle.
