When criticising the French regarding World War II, it's far easier to point at the fleet. On multiple occasions French naval vessels fired at the vessels from the Free French Fleet under de Gaulle, because they decided to stay under German command, which in my opinion is pretty unforgivable.
On the other hand, the Royal Navy shelled the French fleet in port, killing over a thousand French sailors, something which provokes huge controversy to this day and has been branded a war crime.

But had the Royal Navy not done that the Nazis would have had a ready made navy on our door step!! The French did have the chance to scuttle (sp) their ships but refused!!!

As for it being a war crime I have never heard that and if it is true why has a case never come about?

they were given plenty of chances to get off their ships.... Westminster said "Oi, Frenchies, we're going to sink your boats so Jerry can't get his hands on em - gerroff" and they refused to, so they went down with the ships.

If she did turn up unannounced, they'd think we were invading and simply surrender.

Heard a brilliant war related ebay auction joke yesterday....

"WWII Italian made Fiat Tank - VGC, gearbox and engine sound apart from worn out reverse gear"

    Re: So, D-Day

The French do seem to have a real problem with 20th century history (deluded arrogance perhaps?):

When my sister was 16 she spent a year in Brittany with a French family, attending a French school. Apparently in her history class D-Day was taught as nothing less than a French uprising, without which the liberation of France would have been an impossibility.
