My mum's in the Canaries on holiday. She hates flying at the best of times. I hope she's not paying attention to the news or she'll never come back to England.

Still, at least they're making some headway, even if there's no hope of survivors.

There were children on there too. Imagine how scared those people were and it is a bit gut wrenching

Crazy story; spotted this on Wikipedia yesterday, just about to check out the times article now. First thing I thought of was Lost also, but as everyone has said the only difference is survivors are highly unlikely, unfortunately.

pretty easily from the sounds of it :s i get the feeling you could probably make your own out of coat hangers or chicken wire or something

A shopping bag lined with aluminum foil acts as a Faraday cage. It is often used by shoplifters to steal RFID tagged items.
    now that is interesting

An anti-static bag is nothing more than a Faraday cage too!

Well, that's a tree, and hence not a very good example of what lightning does when it hits a plane. Trees, as a rule, aren't very conductive... and so the ohmic heating vapourises the tree's sap and the tree explodes.

Should be fairly easy, although as someone already said, you can get some truly monster lightning bolts.

Say for starters a modest bolt of a 1,000,000 Volts and 10,000 Amps, which gives a Wattage of 10,000,000,000. If the bolt lasts for 1 second, then that's 10 billion joules of energy deposited assuming all the electrical energy is converted to heat. In a decent conductor such as the aluminium skin of a plane, only a tiny fraction of that energy is going to get converted to heat. As a very conservative total guess, say the bolt loses 1/1000 of its energy passing through the plane... that gives 10,000,000 joules deposited... which is about the same energy as in 10 chocolate bars.

Apparently you can get bolts with billions of volts and ~100,000 Amps... I think at that point I'd rather not be in the plane

(and that unfortunate advert in full: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions...avel_less.html)

EDIT: Just watched the advert - dear christ that was unfortunate... but the blogs say it was played before the Hudson crash, not the Rio incident.
